Default voltage question

i thought i read somewhere that a battery in a c5 will work all the assesories but not have enough power to start the car.that is what I'm experiencing. everything works but the car wont start. just clicking sound. battery tested ok at local auto parts store. load test results dropped the voltage down under 12 volts. put a new red top in with same results though. any ideas would be welcome.

If you are getting a single click each time you turn the key the starter is toast.

Your fully charged battery should read approximately 12 volts on your voltmeter/DIC with the ignition on (battery voltage). It should read approximately 14.5 volts with the engine running (alternator voltage). Don't know if that helps you, but if you have good battery voltage, and the engine doesn't turn over, I would be looking for a bad connection or bad ground -- or it could very well be a bad starter. I would think a bad starter would show a serious voltage drop in the "start" position (or headlights dimming when trying to start -- with lights on as a diagnostic test). I am assuming that swapping batteries eliminated a battery problem. A good shop will be able to test any or all of these components independently to isolate the problem -- although a huge PIA, of course. Good Luck.

The load of your accessories are minimal compared to the starter motor. 650 cold cranking amps compared to maybe 1 to 2 amps.
