The owner just called me back (he said I'd hear from him before 10 AM today, and I did!) and said that not only are they going to fix it under warranty, they're going to be able to do it at his place AND they're going to foot the tow bill as well. This gentleman is a Corvette guy from way back and I feel he's actually looking out for me! What a relief!!
Zip-A-De-Doo-Dah-Dave :D :D
An update: By 11AM my C5 was safely loaded on the rollback, transported, and unloaded at the GM place without incident. The owner and the service manager met with me and confirmed that the repairs would be performed without COST TO ME! WHEW!!!! What a relief!!!

That's awesome!!! It's nice to hear a good sucess story.
I'll be out of town from Thurs. thru Sunday. I suspect that the most time consuming part of this venture will be ordering parts. Hopefully by next week the Drop Top will be ready to rock! Also hopefully I'll be getting my Borla XR-1 next week just in time to bolt 'er on! :D
Dave, Congrats on the HAPPY ending! And thanks for sharing this with us...it proves that there are good dealers out there, and that GM steps up and does the right thing from time to time.
OK, you guys aren't going to BELIEVE THIS ONE!! Well, some of you might, but I don't!
I stopped by the GM place today to check the status of my car. The owner met me in the showroom and asked me if I had talked to any of the guys in the back (service). I told him that I hadn't. Then he told me that they had contacted GM about fixing my motor and GM told them not to touch it... not to fix it....
OK, here's the amazing part. The REASON they're not going to fix it is because they're going to REPLACE it. Yep that's right, a brand spanking new LS-1 motor from GM is going into my '98 C5. According to Tom (the owner) this has happened 4 times before and my car was the 5th to do it.
GM's position on it is that its better to simply replace the motor. So, not only am I going to get a BRAND NEW LS-1 for free, I'm also going to get a 36 month/50K mile WARRANTY!!! The new engine is supposed to be here by monday. I'm floating on a cloud here!
Waddya think of that?? :D :D   :smash:
GM has been doing this so they get to look at the engines to see what caused the failure. if the dealer takes the engine apart all this info is lost. snowman i am glad your new engine is working out for you as it is a PIA to spend big dollars and have nothing but trouble.
That is super. What is even better is you get the 'improved' version of the LS1... more power, more torque. :D :D :D
BTW when we are in Fla in November, I want you to go with us to buy Fla Lottery tickets. ;)
I was wondering about that. Tom said the engine may be a "production over run" so I'm not sure what the actual year of production of the motor will be, though I plan to find out.
As for the lottery tickets...50/50 split ok with you?? :D
C5Noir,
I sure will. I talked to the mechanic today that's going to help me do it. I'll have access to a hydraulic lift and all the tools we could possibly need. Do you (or anyone else) think that I should break the new motor in before installing the Borla exhaust? Or does it matter?
Cudos for GM stepping up to the plate. This is a VERY uncommon problem. This is the first I have heard this problem and I have been surfing the ls1 boards for 3 years.
Did you ask what year engine you get? The 01 and later models have more power then the 98's do!
