While at the Bowling Green show I had the opportunity to talk to several vendors. One vendor in particular trashed the BlackWing for the loss of performance you receive with it.
I have one and I am sticking with it. He stated the filter is too large and its shape causes a loss of performance. Of course he was selling K&N filters.
He tells me he has replaced BlackWings that he might just throw away to keep the problem from going to someone else. I think I will "buy" one or two of the poor performers just to keep one cleaned and ready.
They were selling in another booth at Bowling Green for $325 installed. I bought a BlackWing hat and I think the car ran better while I was wearing the hat coming home from BG.
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (BlackTieC5)
BlackTieC5, Because you and others have been so satisfied with the Blackwing, I finally ordered one. I have no idea who I will get to install it yet, but I will get it done in the next few weeks.
I agree with you---just tell the vendor to ship a few of those he is "throwing away".
Glad to hear you got to BG for what had to be a great weekend! :seeya
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (topgun)
If you ever get the chance again ask the K&N rep about the FILTERING (NOT flow) efficiency rating of his filter. This should be a percentage figure (stock is 98.7%) anything less lets more dirt particles directly into the combustion chambers of your motor. K&N is less effective at filtering dirt than Donaldson and Donaldson is less effecient than stock. Then ask him what the filtering efficiency rating is after 4 cleanings. Bet he won't tell you, and if he does, ask if he has the data in writing.
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (Fox)
Does this mean the BlackWIng lest trash into the combustion chambers ?

Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (BlackTieC5)
Lets in more dirt than the stock unit which is built to the GM spec. That's the trade off for the increase in airflow. This is what the performance filter manufacturers are not telling you.
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (BlackTieC5)
The Blackwing rules and there are plenty of users to back it up! Loss of performance, he must be smoking something!?
Give us a hint who the vendor was...
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (Fox)
I think I already stated this above, but it if you look at the differences in the air filter housing between the 01 and 02 Z06 you will see that GM recognizes the fact the 01 was way too restrictive. This is why the 02 housing has been opened up to expose more filter, hence more air! GM has to build things that will be serviced during their planned intervals of a scheduled maitenance plan, naturally that means they don't want to be replacing filters all the time. The cool thing about the Donaldson is it tells you when its time for a bath. I see alot of dudes putting cold airscreens (Z06) on a car with a Vortex, what are these people smoking? It will not do anything! Get a Donaldson or new stock Housing like others sell, let all the cool air go to your radiator the way it was designed to, and drill, cut, or buy some $100.00 screen to put on your car, it will get all the cold air it needs.
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (BlackTieC5)
A friend of mine bought a Blackwing for his '01 vert in the silent auction they had in BG at the show. He came over today for me to help him put it on. It looks as if it's too small in diameter, I know the '01's have larger MAF, but the box or instructions say nothing about year applications. I told him I bet they were all produced before the '01 diameter change. He is going to call them tomorrow and see if they can help. He was real disappointed. :mad
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (BlackTieC5)
Just my .02, but I think my Blackwing did a lot of good for the engine. When I installed it(about 1/2 hour tops), you can feel the difference right away. Have not had a bit of problems and don't expect any! Easy do it your self. The first time it will take a little longer, but after you do it once, when it comes time to clean it I am sure it will only take a few minutes!
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (JIMBONIC)
x-sportc5 you need a bellow kit to install the donaldson on a 2001.i installed mine myself and it was easy.i dont know how much hp and tq i gained but it is a tremendous amount :yesnod:
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (BlackTieC5)
BlackTie C5, Thank you for the encouragement of the Blackwing being a "self install". However, I am not just "mechanically challenged", an accurate description would be mechanically ignorant and afraid to screw up a great car.
I should receive it this week and will find someone to install it as soon as I can.

I doubt it. I had large debris passing the stock setup (like bug wings, small leaves, etc.) and ending up on my MAF screen because of the poor seal that the stock airbox has around the filter. The stock air box is a pretty poor design in my opinion. You have to blindly slide the filter into place and can't really confirm that the bottom edge is really seated; you have to just trust it. In addition, the metal band clamps lossen up over time. Mine were popping off by themselves sometimes. They were also pretty loose even with stock filters. When you clamped it down, it took very little force to engage the clamps. Not good for something that is trying to maintain pressure on the seal all the way around the filter at the same time.
With the Blackwing, I can be sure that at least everything is being filtered.
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (VetteLuv)
I understand your "mechanically challenged" description. After unclipping the two wired components the next hardest thing was removing the old air box from the mounting pins. I just had to tug on the air box a little harder than expected. Do not let anyone charge you a great amount of money for a 20 minute install. Please note the input above of how the 01s and 02s require a bellow kit to install the BlackWing.
The 2000 went right on without any trouble. I managed not to break anything in the process.
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (BlackTieC5)
I own a Blackwing. There was a guy on the Z06 forum that dynoed his car immediately and after the Blackwing install and got a 0 hp and torque gain. My SOTP confirms that. I doubt that any after market intake system by itself is going to give you a hp gain. These cars aren't intake challanged.
If you are looking for a unit that will give you higher particulant filtering for a longer time, the Blackwing would be hard to beat. Me - I was looking for the hp gain and I got duped. It is pretty obvious, so have many others.
Don't listen to dealers or manufacturers of these after market units, they have a vested interest in fictionalizing the performance gains. Look at the few independent tests by end users for reality. They are very few and far between.
Re: Vendor at Bowling Green Trashes BlackWing (BlackTieC5)
BlackTieC5, I ordered from Exit 28, told Tracy it is for an 01 and the coupler you mentioned will be included. I will have all the parts, next will be finding someone with brains and hands for the install.
The numerous posts stating this is not a major job help me sound more intelligent when I talk about the install. Once again, great guys on this Forum will save me money.
