Is there any differerence between a 3.15 rear and a 3.42 rear from a Z06 besides the gears? Thinking about getting the diff. built by DTE and want to see if one is a better platform than the other.
I believe that the Z06 rear gears are shot & peened. (The MN6 is not) The DTE is a better unit (i.e. stonger, better built), but if you can find a used Z06 rear at a good price, it's hard to pass up. HTH
From what I've read the case (pumpkin) is the same. The best thing to do is give DTE a call and ask them.
As mentioned earlier, the Z06 gears are shot peened. DTE goes a step further and has them cryogenically treated for increased hardening. They remove the diff, deburr it (and do probably many other things), and install superior parts in areas that are most likely to experience stress. Below is a picture of my diff when they installed the Stage II package (3.15 to 3.42) for me last year.
In addition to increased strength and lower gearing, the clutch packs seem to grab much better than stock. I did a few small burnouts when stock and the marks one wheel (right side if I remember correctly) would always be about 50% longer than the other. Now they are both equal (did an unintentional 43' burnout a month or so ago as I was practicing launch techniques - pure posi). So, you will notice a difference in a few different areas.
I'm not really worried about the gears since they'll be swapped out anyways, I'm more curious about the case and the other components that DTE won't replace with their stg.2 package.
