exedy?
are exedy clutches really worth it or are u just paying for the name? thinking of getting one but i want it to be good for like close to 500hp and i heard exedy clutches dont have that really stiff feel....
I've run over 600 rwhp on my Exedy Twin without issue. Note that I don't drag race my car though. I ease into it on the expressway which probably makes all the difference in the world.
Some have issues and some don't. Are you going to be drag racing and slipping the clutch like crazy? If so I'd probably look for a different clutch.
If you're interested my Exedy Twin will be for sale within the next few weeks as I'm doing on auto conversion. The clutch is like new.

On the Exedy, we had one, but it didn't last in the car it was installed in. The only thing I can compare it to is a motorcycle clutch. It is very stiff at first, but after about 200-500 miles it changes character. It is still very much an on/off clutch and has a VERY short engagement. But you get used to it.
But once you are used to it, it is kinda fun and not what I'd call bad in any way shape or form. I think it makes a good road racing clutch. We however ran into a few issues with the clutch when drag racing.
We still had the McLeod adjustable master in the car. I think on any clutch other than a McLeod this is a potential issue. The McLeod M/C is different than stock in the ammount of volume, etc... it moves. I think this contributes to possible issues with the clutch. I would recommend a stock M/C with it.
The two issues I found with the Exedy is its engagement. Its engagement point is very short. On top of this its VIOLENT. In the car I was driving on a well prepped track I broke off the short shaft in the rear. The car hit the tires very hard.
On anything other than a VERY well prepped track it was spinning. I tried to slip the clutch on one pass (the 5th one on the clutch) and the clutch immediately glazed on me. After that, it wouldn't hold any power and would slip in high gear.
I have spoken with several folks who have Exedy clutches, and I know of one person who has been working on softening up the hit on the clutch with some very good reports. My concern with the Exedy is with the HP that the clutch itself can take when used in drag racing.
I know it has been reporrted that in higher HP cars the clutch has been slipping, and not holding the HP of the bigger cars. This is of course a cause for concern. I have spoken with Tom at Carolina clutch who was the main distributor and he was aware of the issues.
I think the Exedy has had success in the road racing crowd, and has had good reports from the lower HP. I think in the more extreme applications certain limitations have been seen.
We replaced the Exedy with a Textralia clutch, and have seen zero issues with it. The car has been used for both drag racing and road racing. I think its like anyhting else you have to balance out what you want it to do with its intended application.
I had an Exedy twin disc carbon clutch in a 600HP WRX and it lasted 3 passes down the 1/4 mile. It was complete toast. Biggest waist of $2000 ever. Proper cool down of at least 1 1/2 hours between passes, proper adjustment etc, it just slipped on the 4th run. I'm not sure if they make a carbon carbon now, but they were working on it. From my experience on high horsepower cars they just dont last. I have seen them not last long on high HP EVOs as well.
Contact Supercharger John and ask him his feeling about Excedy. He fried his in no time. It seems to be too much money for a short period of time. I have a Luk stage II and at best I would say it's so so. RPS will be my next clutch
At least one of the people posting in this thread ran a non OEM slave/master with their Exedy. This is a huge no no per the manufacturer.
It'd be nice if people read the directions instead of doing as they please and then bashing a great product. Same goes for the people who do burn outs in 2nd gear and then put their car on the dyno and cry bloody murder when they glaze over the clutch...
Burnouts in 2nd gear.... I was led to believe that is the proper thing to do. What is the issue with doing them in 2nd gear? I am trying to decide what Clutch/Hydraulics I should use as I am experiencing sticky pedal on every run and even around town on an aggressive row through the gears. I have been changing the fluid for 2 months with no improvement in pedal.
So far I have not heard of any package that is the panacea I am really confused as to which way to go.
I've been installing the Spec clutches with very good results. For the money they are very hard to beat. Look at the stage 3+ it should be all you want.

Take a look at the Cartek clutch before you make a choice. I've been very happy with mine. You'll find in your research that little if any issues have come up with that clutch.
