I have a 2000 MN6 convertible. With the A/C on, there is a "whirring" sound (sort of a high-pitched whistling) accompanied by a steady ticking/knocking coming from the front-right of the engine. It stops with the A/C off.
sounds normal..... the click is it compressor turning on and off... The whirling sound is probably your fan (which comes on at lower tempature when the a/c is on) You have 2 fans... one that comes on at i believe normal operating temps and the other comes on at a much higher tempature or when the a/c is on.

I wish it were either of those.
The ticking is very rapid - in synch with the belt rotation - and pretty loud . The whirring is very high-pitched and obnoxious. It is over and above the fan noise.
There is another C5 here at work - no comparison when he kicks on his A/C!
Check the simpler things first. You could have a problem with the belt tensioner. When the compressor is on it puts a pretty good load on the belt and the tensioner may be on its way out and making a lot of noise.
