What should I do? I got this code a couple of weeks ago and then I reset it. Car ran fine for the next week or so and now its back again.
I notice that my check engine light comes on after my car transmission gets warmed up (about 215 degrees) and starts to hard shift. (I have a 2000 A4). Is it time to get the transmission fluid changed out or serviced? What do I need to do? My car has 30100 miles on it. Any help will be appreciated.
P1870 has to do with the TCC module. It is not locking up the torque converter properly at cruising speeds. This part can be changed by dropping the pan and filter. It's messy but you can do it lying on your back with the car jacked up. I replaced this on my S-10 4x4, except my truck is high enough that I didn't even need to jack it up. It's not expensive either. Fluid, filter and part should be under $100. While you are at it, you can install a drain plug in your trans pan, it will make servicing easier and neater. I don't know why they never put drain plugs in trans pans. BTW, you'll probably have to get the module from a dealer.

That sounds like a good Idea, Thanks striper.
If this TCC Module is the problem, will it cause my CEL to come on when the transmission temp gets hot and starts to hard shift. I'm just wondering why I dont get the hard shifts and CEL until my transmission temps get over 200 degrees. It may be coincidence.
1870 can be set by a trans slip if certain conditions are met It disables tc lockup. You need to reset the code drive the car before it sets the code get the car in high gear at a steady throttle state then touch the brake pedal just enough for the brake lights to come on but not enough to apply the brakes. If the TCC is working the RPMs will raise a couple hundred. If they do the TCC is likely working and the trans is slipping if this is the case the trans needs work after the trans slips 1 time it has serious damage.
It may be hard to check if the code sets before you get the car to speed.
If you need work done on an automatic trans Rodney at RPM transmission is the only guy to call

I did notice that the error occurred only when the trans gets hot. The brake pedal test is one way to see if that's the problem, however when I did the test it intermittently was okay and then sometimes not okay. The TCC module was working properly sometimes, sometimes not. It was cheap enough to try a new one.
