I have an 01 z06 steering column started acting up so i checked battery voltage and only had 12.2 volts . put a new battery in and the problem still got worse i was always able to jiggle wheel push hard to the right and turn key and eventually it would unlock. anyway the car would always start for just a few seconds and stall until the locking mechanism retracted then it would run fine. My question is , i got the column to unlock and then i unplugged the motor wiring harness with the green, purple, orange and black wires . Now the car will start and continue to run, but will it die at 4mph , or will something not getting the proper signal make the car quite on me. I was told that my year only needed to have computer settings changed. Do i need the bypass?

The actuator on the steering wheel is disconnected and that is good. You need to attach a CLB to what was previously attached to the actuator to send the proper signal to the BCM. The CLB will work for you.
As said, you need the CLB. Simply unplugging the column lock harness will not prevent the fuel cutoff.
The BCM sends the lock/unlock signals to the CL and expects lock/unlock feedback from the CL status switch built into it. If you unplug the CL harness, the BCM does not receive any feedback signals, so it can't determine if the CL is actually unlocked. It goes into what's called a Fail Enable mode, which instructs the PCM to cut fuel if the car is driven above 2 MPH to prevent someone from driving with a locked wheel.
The CLB receives the lock/unlock signals and will respond back to the BCM with the expected feedback signals, hence keeping it happy so there's no fuel cutoff.
BTW, I highly recommend you don't let GM try to perform the latest recall. Read all the experiences from others about problems even after the recall. The CLB is the best solution.

If you've not had any recalls done, disconnect your column lock motor while it's in the unlocked condition. You should be able to drive this way with the error messages being the only annoying thing to contend with. Just reset the DIC each driving cycle until you get your CLB installed.

Thanks guys i guess i will try to drive it and see if the fuel cuts off, as i mentioned it use to just start and run for about five seconds and shut off standing still. When it started i was suprised but i was afraid to drive it and get stranded somewhere or have it lock up on me. Thanks again.
Oh , thanks for the dealership warning. I dont let anyone expecially the dealership touch my car i have had many bad experiences.
I don't take my car into the dealerships either. But in their defense, the C5 is a very complex car to work on. It's all computerized drive by wire. Not many techs have enough training or experience to deal with some of the more difficult problems we have seen. Especially related to the column lock problems where GM had a severe design issue with several disappointing attempts to fix it...all without success.
I took my z in for an oil change and they punctured a hole in my seat with a screwdriver or something and of course i didnt notice it until the morning when it was light out. The second time was for a tranny leak under warranty which had to be brought back 3 times for a week at a time. When i got it back the third time they had put 75 miles on it and scratched the tint on my passenger window. Then when i took it in because the fuel senser was trippin out they put a 4inch scratch on the top of the rear spoiler. When i saw that i just grabbed my keys and left never to return. Had 1 good experience there though, while my car was being looked at i walked over to the showroom and was looking at a 2004 z06 when a salesman came up to me and said '' Yeah kid save up some money and maybe one day a car like this could be yours". I didnt say anything but when i drove out of the service area he was leaning over a rail smoking a cigerette and when he heard the blower whine from my car he looked over and his jaw dropped when he saw me drive by. I could read his lips as he told the guy next to him "son of a bitch"

This is why they should stop selling Corvettes through Chevrolet dealerships, or at least have a segregated area for Corvettes with Corvette only techs and Corvette certifications. I understand why people buy Porsches, and other high-end cars through high-end dealers.
It seems to happen wherever i go . I took my car in to a corvette specialist and this is a world known corvette place. I drove it 60 miles to have the gears done and the rearend cryogenically treated and they didnt break it in properly and the gears went out the next morning. Not to mention they left the exhaust hanger bolts loose so my muffler fell while i was driving home luckily i had a hanger in the trunk. They also left the e brake cable holding clips off so when i went over a bump my tires were rubbing on the cables, almost wore through them. Took it back they fixed it but when i got home i noticed a drip of oil around the drain plug and when i touched it to see if it was loose it fell out and all the oil started rushing out. when i called the service manager to tell him he never even called me back. Im ordering the parts from g force transmissions and im doing it myself, I know i will take the time to double check everything.
