Having just sprung for a blown 427 (773 RWHP), I'm getting to know my '98 coupe's traction control system on a regular basis. My question concerns how the thing is supposed to work. When I really get the wheels spinning with a little yaw thrown in, the system activates and puts the car in reduced power mode, leaving me in the middle of traffic with about 25 HP to get me to a safe place. Isn't it supposed to turn itself off after a bit? My only recourse seems to be shutting the engine and waiting the magic ten seconds before restarting. This is ruining my good time.

My 97 mn6 activates the traction control when the wheels spin also, but it comes back to me within a half second or so, it does startle me when it happens but it never leaves me without power as you describe.
out of habit..i turn mine off as soon as i start the car...i wanna spin the tires when i wanna spin the tires...i hate that feature........unless i let someone else drive it.....THEN i like that feature

Are you saying you get the Reduced Power Message on the DIC or are you saying the power seems to disappear for a short period of time? The system is supposed to us power reduction as a way to control traction if the brakes are not enough. Initially at slow speeds the system relys mostly on brake with throttle control as a backup. However, at higher speeds the system chooses throttle control over brakes since the brakes cannot react fast enough. My 97 would cut power going over bumps or after spinning the tires for a while and it seemed like forever (especially when pulling out of a rough driveway at slow speed and having the throttle cut just as the car enters traffic) but really was about a second.
