Default Quick question for double roller timing chain guys

Can you swap the cam (ie. remove the cam gear) without removing the oil pump bolts and moving the oil pump forward?

You can remove the cam gear but not the crank gear. If you have a double roller and just want to swap cams you can do that without having to touch the oil pump.

Actually, most double roller setups I have seen you CAN NOT remove the upper gear without removing the oil pump. Single chain not a problem. Most double roller setups have a thrust bearing on the back of the cam gear. This bearing will hit the cam plate retaining bolts and will not drop low enough to remove the chain from the gear. Once you remove the oil pump the gear will come down and forward clearing the bolts. The only exception to this that I have seen in the Crane 144984-1 top adjustable kit. With this kit you can separate the upper gear leaving the hub on the cam, this will allow the gear to drop low enough to remove the chain. Then you lift the gear back up and remove the hub from the cam, then you can pull the gear forward and remove the hub from behind the gear, then you can lift out the gear. Works great with a two piece timing cover!
