To all of you gurus out there...I have been trying to figure out how to fix a vibration noise comming from the belts/pulley area (drive belt system I think). I replace both belts with Goodyear Gatorbacks together with the drive belt tensioner and idler. The new idler was somewhat different from the factory. The factory Unit has two large spacers/washers (front and back). The new idler did not. I tried installing the washers with the new idler but they don't fit perfectly, so I installed the idler without them. Has anyone replace their idlers with the Goodyear kind?
The main issue is with drive belt tensioner vibration. Once the car is in drive (DD 98 A4), an anoying vibration is heard. I think the vibration is comming from tensioner vibrating and hitting its metal body. I'm guessing there is got to be some sort of restriction in the system causing the idler to vibrate. I've checked the harmonic balance for wobble but there is none, that I can see at least.
Sorry for the painfully long post...the rattling noise comming from the engine bay is getting extremely anoying. Any help will be appreciated
is it a high pitch noise? I am getting that from mine, brought it to the dealership they checked the crank pulley said it looked fine... Said it was the belts. I just put gatorback belts on 20k miles ago... stumped, I hate to spend that much money on new belts and not fix the problem... how hard is it to change the belts yourself?
Prior to the belt change it was just a simple chirping sound, typical belt noise. All the noise went away immediately after the belt change for a short time. After replacing the idler, the noise is not as loud but it is loud enough for me to hear it while idling at a light.
The belts are really simple to replace. The A/C belt is a bit of a pain since the space is really cramped, but not to bad. Just make sure not to let the tensioner snap back in place hard. It may damage the internal spring. Let me know if you need more help.
