Have a high mileage C5 with a sloppy stock 6spd shifter. Normally when cold, all works ok but once warmed up, my shift into first gear doesn't always engage the gear. It detents like usual but doesn't actually engage unless you push it a bit more then you should have to. Talked to folks down at the Vette homecoming in Bowling Green and am told it is not the shifter but the car. Talked to the dealer and they claim it is a common problem with the design. Anyone else with this problem or is it just me?
Also, on occasion, the fuel gauge reads empty (dash warning etc.) when in fact it's full or almost full?? Any ideas???
Thanks for any help here. Was going to buy a aftermarket shifter but now not sure it would help.
Re: New kid on block - - stock shifter problems? (Huck)
I believe an aftermarket shifter might help. I have a B&M Ripper and one thing it does is make a more sure/confident shift into gear. You can feel it going into each gate.
The fuel guage problem seems to be prevalant in many older C5s. I have a guage problem but mine says I have 1/2 tank when I have none. A much more dangerous/inconvenient problem than yours.
There are TSBs out on these two types of guage problems and you should be able to get help via the dealer if under warranty.
Some folks like me have the problem addressed at the dealer and it does not fix the problem. Some go back again some live with it.
If it is out of warranty and telling you you have less gas than you do I might just leave as is.

Chuck, tks for the info. My car has 63,000 miles (way out of warranty) and is pure stock. The shifter feels like there is junk or insulation wraped around it some where or that the shaft leading to the actual transmission is out of adjustment. Had a Porsche 928C4 which was a similar design as the C5 but a much better shifter. Anyone thinking the C5 is complicated hasen't dealt with the 928's as their electronics were 70s vintage. AND you are real lucky if you can find a dealer with one qualified 928 service guy. Only cost $72K in 88'. I may just do the shifter upgrade but kind of like what I've read about the Hurst unit. Will have to find one first. Tks & regards :smash:
Re: New kid on block - - stock shifter problems? (Huck)
Huck- when i bought my 98 w/ 70K mi, the shifter was so sloppy that i could hardly shift at all. I could pull up on the shift **** & the entire shaft would pop out, completely unattached to anything! Turned out to be the shifter was shot. Put a new one in & its perfect. Can't say for sure if you have the same problem. Thought this might help. Scott
I second the recommendation for changing the fluid. I suggest doing that before changing the shifter. I installed the Ripper shifter, which I really like, but it isn't for everyone. It is a bit stiff, but much more positive than the stocker. I'm going to change to Redline fluid soon. CAU-LLC sells a kit for $80, which I purchased today.
My 2001 had the gas guage go to empty, with all the messages, twice. Once it reset with the DIC, the other time I had to fill the tanks.
BTW, chucshramm, your signature is WAY to big! Some people have slow dial-up service.
