Default A/C HVAC Issues

My problem is that when the a/c is on, the air comes out of
all the vents (dash, console, floor). Instead of only coming out
of the one I select nice and strong, it comes out of all of them
weak! In short the hvac control does not work. I can turn it
off and on and select the temp, but I can not direct it. I just
got the car back from a local mechanic for a secondary air
injection problem. He replaced a broken vacuum line under the
battery. That's when I noticed these codes:
HVAC: B0361
B0441
B0446
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

All the controls for vent VS floor VS defrost air routing is done with vacuum actuated diaphrams. The vacuum line comes out of the back of the intake (impossible to see without removing the intake) down to under the battery, through the firewall to the actuators. Sounds like the vacuum line is disconnected somewhere, maybe when he fixe the line under the battery, more than likely from where it comes out of the back of the manifold. It's just slip fit.

Whats weird is those codes dont jive with the problem you're seeing. They all relate to the actuators which control the heat diverted into the air stream on the drivers and pasenger side for dual climate control. These actuators are controlled via an electronic acutator.

B0361 Left Actuator Feedback Short to GND
B0441 Left Actuator Out of Range
B0446 Right Actuator Out of Range

I would say fix the defrost/vent/floor blowing problem first, clear your codes and see if they come back. If they do, do a search on them. There are plenty of treads about how to fix them which range from adding freon to replacing the actuator(s) to opening the actuators up and indexing the gears inside. All of this should only relate to temp differential between the driver and passenger sides though.

Since he was messing with your vacuum lines, I wouldn't be surprised if it came loose from the back of the intake. The line looks like a tiny stir straw. Very hard to see without pulling the intake, you may be able to just slide the intake forward some without totally removing it.

I'd advise eliminating the vacumn line circuit before going deeper. The HVAC system uses vacumn to control modes. The vacumn source is off of the MAP sensor at the back of the intake manifold. Don't try and find it, you have to move the intake manifold forward to get to it. A 1/8" plastic vacumn line is routed (in the middle of one of two large wiring harnesses) into the battery compartment past the PCM and down to the bottom of a two way check valve. This check valve is attached to a vacumn reserve tank mounted inside the fender near the passenger door edge. The middle of the check valve is attached directly to the reserve tank. A second vacumn line is attached to the top of the check valve and is routed up to the large firewall wiring nipple whose wire bundle goes into the passenger compartment opposite the battery. Buried in that wiring bundle is your HVAC actuator vacumn source line coming from the two way check valve. You can easily see the check valve and vacumn reserve tank by removing the passenger wheel well access panel. If any of that circuit is bad (i.e., holes in lines, cracked lines, bad check valve, hoses jammed too deeply into elbow connectors at check valve, etc.) you'll have little or no vacumn for the HVAC system. Once it goes bad, it's touchy to get right. Best of luck. I've had to 'fix' mine twice.

Thank you guys for all the great info. I was suspecting a vacuum
related problem, and from your descriptions I at least
know where to start looking. Thanks again!

I'd say you're screwed and to suck it up with the summer heat.

Just playin' man. Really hope you get that sucker fixed. Black cars + hot summers + no A/C = Hell.

You can ride with me in my C5 for the really hot days.
