Default Question about powder coating calipers

Those of you that have had this done. Are you pulling the piston out of the caliper before sending them in? Considering how hot the rotors and calipers can get I'm not sure it would be necessary but thought I'd better ask.

Nope just sent the whole caliper in. I used corvette pilot here on the forum and he took care of everything. If you want to see some pics of my calipers look here:

Typically the powder cote ovens heat up to almost 400 degrees. The length of time they cook depends on the types of finish also they have a cure time where the temp is reduced. I dont know how hot the calipers get under normal driving conditions. I suppose they are insulated somewhat from the rotors by the pads. I painted mine with rustoleum metallic blue almost two years ago as well as the brackets. They still look like the day I painted them. If you race they may get hot enough to do something to the color but for every day driving I dont think they get hot enuf. I would be surprised if they reached 400 degrees. It would probably be a good thing to do to remove the pistons as they are plastic & I heard of one guy on the forum melting his, or at least the boots, on a race car. Put a piece of wood between the puck and the caliper so when you use the air hose to blow em out it wont damage the puck. Just mark which one goes where and as long as they are out get a minor rebuild kit and change out the rubber rings & seals to install when you get them back. It cant hurt to be safe and then you will have like new units when you are done. Have fun.
