Default Optima dead after one year.

I was so happy with my Optima until today. Not completely dead but the starter does the clicking thing.

I drive my vette as a pleasure vehicle on the weekends so it sits
all week waiting for me.

I have read about other Optima not lasting very long.

Autozone says they will have to charge it like 12 hours to see if it
has a problem.
If it does not come back to proper volts they will replace it.
Has to be charged before they can check it.

I guess that is fair.

I didn't tell them I had it on a one amp slow charger for four hours.
The trouble light come on on the charger.

Will see what happens.

Only reason I went to that type of battery is I was afraid of a leak.

What is everone else going to or using.

Do you folks use a battery tender ?

Thanks in advace for the replies.

My Redtop developed a leak at about 1 year. A small crack in the plastic molding where one of the cells meets the base.

I've had it with designer batteries! I went and bought a Costco $40 battery. No problems so far (about a year)

Leaked Hope it didn't damage anything.

Kind of defeats the whole purpose of that kind of battery. Right.

I was thinking of going to Wal Mart and getting just a 36 month one.

I will see what Auto Zone does.

Guess I will get one of those acid matt things, just in case.

I'm on my third red top in one year. This last one read as a short in the battery when I tried to charge it. I would not recomend a red top.

After having 3 Optima Red Tops die in 4.5 years, I bought a Sears DieHard Gold. It's been 1 year and so-far-so-good. I'm still amazed people continue to buy over priced Optimas with their known record and history of premature cell faliure...

I too got tired of the Optima lifetime and got a Gold from Sears. By the way you can get the adapters for your cables and buy the top post, no more side leaks.

I bought an Optima red top for my 2002Z. I have a Battery Tender connected to it. The battery seems happy. I bought a similar red top for my Z28 and after two weeks, it was dead. It would hold only 2.7 volts. My flashlight had more power. It did not have a Battery tender on it. On the failed battery, Autozone has a machine that determines if the battery is bad. If it has dead cells, the machine will tell you that immediately. If the battery has weak cells, will hold somewhat of a charge, a load test will determine if the battery is trash. Autozone replaced my red top free. So far it is happy without the Battery Tender. I plan on carrying jumper cables with me and my cell phone. The Exide Orbital (Wall-Mart=Everstart Ultra) is a very good spiral technology battery but only carries a two year free replacement warranty. I'm sticking with the Optima until I get a good one. I've already paid the money--might as well ride it out.
