Default Heads

Many have done P&P heads. Some shaved to increase compression. My question is: How about if I do a cam without doing the heads? What am I missing? I understand the $ savings by doing them at the same time but $1,200 for heads just does not seem cost effective to HP gain.

Your thoughts & experience appreciated.

Lots of people just do a cam and leave the stock heads till they put in a bigger motor, or maybe just want the extra 35-55 rwhp. The cam by itself is going to give a bigger gain than the heads will... Usually 50-75 rwhp from a good cam like our C cam (236/238 on a 112, .605/.608 lift), or our S cam (238/242 on a 113, .610/.615 lift). You'll notice a significant gain from just doing a cam.... Heads after a cam install are more like, you can tell a difference, but it's not a huge difference.

Is it a misconception that a cam is harder on the stock heads re} springs etc?

We replace the springs with every cam install... Stock springs aren't good for anything above and beyond the stock cam and rockers. Truth of the matter might even be that aftermarket cams are easier on stock heads rather than aftermarket heads, simply due to the fact that aftermarket heads 90% of the time come with heavier than stock valves that are harder on the seats when opening and closing. Nothing I'd ever concern myself with at all, just theoretically speaking.

The factory seats might not be able to take the abuse quite as well as an aftermarket hardened seat, however I have never seen this become a problem...

If it were me, I would get a cam first. The ones mentioned would give you a very nice sounding rumble.

Do heads and cam together.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and spend the extra cash to do it right. New cam without new springs=Trouble.
Oil pump and timing set is right there on the front of the engine so why not do it with the cam? I don't get it.

Our most popular cam is the biggest one that we offer for the stock bottom end. Anything bigger simply is just too risky with piston to valve clearance. Anything smaller, just doesn't make as much power..

The kit includes,

HPE S cam (238/242 on a 113 LSA, .608/.612 lift)
Chromemoly pushrods
Patriot Gold dual valve springs (max lift .650)
Titanium retainers
Super 7 Lock
Locators
Valve Seals
Crankshaft Balancer Bolt

The price is 774.95 + shipping. I can help you out with the tune when the time comes. Or you can send us the car and we'll do a whole bunch of stuff as well Just let me know!
