I just saw a post on the for-sale section for AC delco fuel filters part # GF822 for a 2002...I was always under the impression that C5's had fuel filters inside the gas tanks, and were never change-able like a conventional fuel filter...where did I go wrong? If they are indeed external, I'm assuming this is something that should be replaced every couple of years. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

driver side right above exhaust pipe joint in tunnel . 10 mm nut ,fuel line release tool, much easier with exhaust flange unbolted. there was no scheduled maintence but 50000 is a good time. dont even think doin it without fuel line tool for the front line, other 2 a small screw driver and put old locks on new filter [plastic]
The 2004's have the new fuel system with the filters in the tank. I don't know when that broke into production...it wasn't always that way on the C-5.
True. Partway through model year 2003 (starting with 2003 VIN 35114929 produced on 11/25/02, so I've read), GM totally redesigned the C5 fuel system. For 2003 Corvettes only, this system was designated by RPO code FFS, which can be found on the car's Service Parts Identification (RPO) Label. However, the name "FFS" has been unofficially applied to all vehicles with the new system.
For those C5s with the redesigned FFS fuel system, the fuel filter as debmwb mentioned above is inside the left fuel tank and is part of the left fuel sender assembly. Too, the tanks do have to be dropped to replace the sender assemblies. According to the GM Service Manual, there is no service interval for fuel filter replacement for the FFS fuel system.
For those interested, you can read more about the redesigned FFS fuel system at the following link:

There have been at least 3 different style fuel filters for the C5s of which I'm aware. For model years '97 and '98, the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator were separate with the fuel pressure regulator up by the engine on the fuel rail and the filter located on the car's driver side frame just in front of the left wheel well. For model years 1999 through 2002 and partway through 2003, the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator were one assembly located on the car's driver side frame just in front of the left wheel well. Then part way through model year 2003 with introduction of the redesigned FFS fuel system (see my post above), the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator were moved inside the left fuel tank as part of left fuel sender assembly. The following thread also contains more info on the different style C5 fuel filters. It also contains a picture of the fuel filter/pressure regulator assembly used for model years 1999 through 2002 and part way through 2003.
For C5s with the non-FFS fuel system, the GM Service Manuals that I have seen read as follows: "There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement. Replace a restricted fuel filter."
With that having been said, it certainly won't hurt anything to change yours and this could save you some problems perhaps sooner than later.
