On a 99 6 SPD does the shifter **** just screw off or is there a trick to removing it?

If it is the same as a 2000 or 2001, the insert with the shift pattern will pull out. Use a flat screw driver to ease it up. Underneath that is a pin with a "T" shape to it that keeps the **** straight and from turning. Use a pair of needle nose plyers to pull it stright up and out. The **** will then screw off.

Complete instructions in the Tech Tip section.

I use the two screwdriver technique rather than the vise grips, comes off easily, then the **** unscrews. I use teflon tape around the shaft before screwing on the new ****. It holds without having to be screwed overly tight.
