I have done all you can with both the stock system, Zo6 airbox, K&N, then tried the Halltech which comes with smooth air duct and a larger air bridge and of course the huge oiled cotton air filter. Performance wise , my assmeter could feel no difference nor could my Tazzo.Pics are modified stock airbox with K&N, and my current Halltech setup.

Your modified airbox looks similar to my modified Z06 lid which was shown in the test. The only difference is that I drilled about 7 holes on each side with a 1" spade drill for a little extra flow. It still seems that the stock design lid is shrouded by the hood, front fascia, and bumper. I will post a pic shortly.

In my book, the 30 CFM gain is well worth it.

Paul, thank you so much for sharing the results of all your hard work and analysis with us forum members. I have an '02 Z06 air box lid, on my '00, A4, and I'd like to improve the air flow, by enlarging the opening and drilling the holes, like you did. Can you provide a picture of the Z06 lid after you performed these two modifications?

Thank you again for sharing your information and knowledge!

Here you go. I cut the center out and drilled about 7 - 1" diameter holes on each side of the lid. With these mods, the assembly flowed about the same with or without the lid in place.

More tests coming soon. If any members have any parts they would like evaluated, please let me know.

Do you have any problems with rain getting in the air box without the aftermarket hood seal installed?

Zip-ties and a hood seal flow better than a modified lid. They're also easier to undo. When done right, you'll also get a great seal to the airbox.

Of course, you won't impress the chicks this way. Good thing I'm married.

If it is a '97-'00 C-5, the stock airbox only breathes through 4 holes that are about the size of a quarter.
In the '01 and up C-5, the sides are completly open and there is a small (about 2" wide) scoop on the top.
The Z has a large scoop (about 6" wide) on the top, with the sides open inside.

All very good info. Where in Houston are you located? I have a few things I wouldn't mind getting flow tested

Is the Z06 box any bigger or just more cut outs for air intake. I have a 2000 so I'm wondering if a Z06 air box will work or should I just mod the one I have.
Look forward to more test results I like imformative threads like this one and have done similar testing on my race bikes.

It's physically the same size, it just has a large naca duct style scoop in the top of the lid. I would guess that the modified airbox will flow more than the stock Z06 box.

Just bought an LS2 intake for $50 at a local swap meet here in Houston. I will be doing some flow testing soon on a mildly ported LS1 head in conjunction with an LS1, LS6, and LS2 intake bolted up. Should be interesting. Look for it in about a week or so.

I would love to get my hands on a set of L92 heads and Holden intake for some testing.

Paul

IMO you are doing the right thing by assembling all the air intake components as they would be under the hood, then changing one to see what the change in flow would be. Just testing one type of component, say throttle bodies, with a vacuum pull of 10" H2O would be meaningless because the throttle body would never see that much pressure drop with maximum engine air flow. Since every intake component is in series, the important thing is how they work together. The original LS1 engine design used this principle when the head designers were allowed to design the intake manifold also.
