If your planning on having it done for you it will run you a shade under $2K... mabye as low as $ 1,500 if you live in a low wage state. You should be upgrading to a shot peened (hardened) drive shaft. Pound for pound the most noticable mod you will probably do for the money in terms of WTF was that!

Only benefit I can see with the 3.15 is better gas milage, and if you EVER wana sell your car, you can sell it as, "Performance axle" option. 3.15 as standard perf optional upgrade on A4's. 3.42 would be considered aftermarket upgrade. I'm sure someone might chime in..
going from 273's to 315's is a nice little boost, great for everyday driveing, you will be paying the price for the gear change long after you do it in gas mileage, more power 342's more gas, but nice acceleration.
I lost maybe 1 mpg on the highway and picked up about 2 around town with the 2.73 to 3.42 swap. I average about 21 mpg combined
I have 315's and wouldn't mind going to the 342's w/the overdrive it wouldn't really be too much of a difference! Dang it sure would have an *** grunt out of the hole!!!
Thanks,Matt
1st gear in the the A4 with the 3.42... is almost exactly the same as the MN12 Z06 tranny in 1st gear (with the 3.42).
