Default Question for Ceramic Brake pad Users???

A few months ago, I installed the Ceramic pads from GM and I have noticed something odd.

You know how when you wash the car or it rains ( yes, I do drive mine in the rain now and then; sorry) and the rotors get a light film of rust and then as soon as you drive a little it goes away. Well ever since I installed the ceramic pads, I have noticed a permanent ring of rust about an eighth of an inch wide on both the outer rim of the rotors and the inner rim.

Are these pads smaller than the stock ones. Is it possible they are not installed correctly. It is happenning on all four wheels.

Anyone else with these pads have this problem. Thanks

tr18,

Now that you mention it, mine are doing the same thing. For two years my rotors always looked like brand new. This spring I installed new wheels, GM racing rotors, and ceramic pads all around. Now I have the rust ring you described.

I'm curious to know if other ceramic pad users have experienced the same thing.

I swapped from stock to Raybestos, and didn't notice a change in the rust ring-it was there with stock pads too, at least in my case. If you've still got the stock pads around, just measure the pad material length and widthwise with a ruler, and compare to your new pad measurements.

Same here. Ceramic pads, rust on rotor. I can't remember if I had the same problem with the stock pads though. I changed to the new wheels at the same time so it's more noticeable.

I am about to go that route also. I wonder if the ceramic pads are less flexible (or no flex at all) on a slightly grooved rotor there would be an area where it does not make contact.

Were the rotors new when you put the pads on?

How do you like the performance otherwise?

The rotors were not new, but they were cut when the new pads were put on.

I don't really notice any difference on stopping power, plus or minus. The biggest difference is NO BRAKE DUST!!! :D :D :D

I know for sure the rotors were clean all around when the stock pads were on.

I have heard of people grinding the outer edges of the pads to stop the squeling and brake dust.
Did you happen to notice the edges of the pads in comparison to the stock ones?
I'll be doing brakes this winter and am very curios?
Would you do the ceramics again?

I really don't know. I love the fact that brake dust has all but disapperaed. However, these two rust rings on each wheel look horrible.

Our rotors are completely clean, no rust rings.

Yes, I would do this again. Great stopping power, no noise and limited dust. Easy dust to remove when cleaning the car and wheels.

The pads must be a little smaller than stock; those with no problem amy have pads from a different supplier. No dust sounds good!
