Default Best way to replace P. Steering fluid?

02 Z06.

On other cars I have sucked it out with a syringe/tube. There has to be a better way. That method leaves a lot of old fluid behind...

Thank You,

MD

Using a turkey baster to suck out all the fluid and just refill it.

After refilling take the car for a short spin and do a few lock to lock turns to run some of the new fluid in to the steering and then empty and refill. Other way is to take off return hose and use pump to pump out old fluid.

Don't just refill it once. Use whatever you want to get the old fluid out of the reservoir. Then start the car and turn the wheel from lock to lock a few times. Then repeat the drain and fill process. I had to repeat this process 4 times before the fluid in the reservoir looked good. All in all it took less than 2 quarts and < 1/2 hour.

....and use PS fluid not auto tranny fluid. GM has a seperate part # for the PS fluid.

I found the best way to purge the oil out is to raise the front end, suck out the resvoir as much as possible, disconnect the return hose to the resvoir and cap the resevoir, direct the hose down into a bucket or bottle to catch the remaining fluid. I put towels under the resevoir to catch any spilled fluid. Still with the engine off and the hose in the bottle, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. Then refill the resevoir with fresh fluid and continue to turn the steering wheel and run enough new fluid thru it until what is draining out is clean. Re-connect the hose to the resevoir and fill with new fluid. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times to fill the rack with fluid. Check the resevoir to make sure it's full and NOW start the car. Again turn the steering wheel until the air is purged. Lower the car, re-check the fluid level and test drive. Never start the engine with the resevoir empty or pump damage will happen.
