I ran my 2001 Z06 at a driving school this weekend, and had an odd problem, which did not come up in previous driving schools. I corded my front tires (Goodyear F1SC stock tires) and almost my rears on Friday. Due to availability, I was only able to replace the fronts with Toyo Proxes T1-S and have to wait until the end of the week until my rears come in. To get to the point, I ran great all day on Friday with the stock tires in Competitive mode and active handling only kicked in once when I really tried to break the back end loose in the hairpin. But on Saturday and Sunday with the new Toyo fronts and Goodyear rears (again, in Competitive mode), even coasting thru the corners at comparatively low speeds I had the active handling kick in on almost every corner. Does anyone know why this might be? I can only guess that it might be due to a front-to-back tire speed comparison in the computer. The Proxes T1-S appear to be larger in diameter with their huge tread depth than the GY F1SC fronts, but they have the same 265/40ZR17 measurements. Is the computer deciding that the front wheel spin is too slow in comparison with the rears when cornering?
Along the same lines, does anyone know how to completely disable the active handling, so that I can really learn how to drive my car well? Thanks in advance for any help!
Re: Tire size & active handling question (SEAMOORE)
Sorry, I think you misinterpretted my question, this was not a question of "how" to get into Competitive mode, as I run that way whenever I'm on the track. What I was trying to ask was if anyone knew why active handling would be kicking in on every corner after changing the front tires despite being in Competitive mode.
Competitive mode removes most of the active handling triggers but not all of it, if I forced a fishtail out of a hairpin it would still kick in if the rear was really really hangin' out there, but otherwise it would never come on. After the front change to a same-size, different-manufacturer tire, the car seems to be getting really confused now and turns active handling on for even the most mundane corners. I will be putting the matching Toyo rears on at the end of the week, so I will follow up if I find that that cures my problem. An interesting note here was that on one session I had the active handling kick in so many times that I think it confused the computer enough that the "Service Active Handling soon" banner came up, and it gave up on trying to control the car. Once that happened, I was back to being able to run full track speed again without the computer killing the throttle (until I pitted in at the end of session, as turning the car off appears to have cleared the service condition). Thanks just the same though!
