Default C5 Programing a replacement key?

I need a additional key for my 03 Z06, I was told that some GM keys can be programed by placing the key in the ignition, in the on postion and the key will program itself is this true? I only have 1 key and GM in Canada wants $40. for the key and $35. for programing there's got to be a less expensive way.

Don't know about the programming...
My '01 has a VATS key with a resistor pellet imbedded in the key.
You need to know the VATS value. You can get it by measuring the resistance.
then a local locksmith can order your the key or you can buy one on eBay.
I got two VATS blanks for $9 and the local locksmith cut them for $1.50 each. 2 keys for $12!

here's the link to the vendors on-line store.

The GM two sided key worked for me.

Here's a link to a previous thread that tells you how to take the reading and how to translate that reading into the VATS number you will need to order the key.
