Had 3.90 gears and a Yank 3200 coverter installed a couple of months ago. Ever since, have heard a high pitched whine on acceleration. Pitch gets higher as RPMs increase until overtaken by sound of exhaust. Sounds similar to engine noise transmitting through stereo speakers. Guys at the shop that did the install say it's not the gears or the converter, but they hear whine also. They think it is something electrical, although definitely not coming through speakers.
If you are cruising at 70mph and you let off the gas pedal does the whine stop and then come back under acceleration? If it does I would say it sounds like a bad diff. I have also heard that the torque tube can go bad and cause a whine but that is not so common.

only really notice when accelerating from stop or very slow speeds.
I have the same issue with my 3.90s. It isnt too bad till you get to the higher speeds. When you let off the gas at 55 to what ever it stops put the gas back to it and the noise comes back. When I put mine on the dyno I looked at it and yes it is the gears whining. So Im replacing mine this winter when its in storage.

Not sure we are experiencing the same thing. My noise occurs only on acceleration from low RPMs and disappears while at cruising speeds. Will pay closer attention to see if noise reappears when I get on it again from 55 MPH and above. Has yours gotten worse over time? Mine has been the same since the install. I've heard that if it is the gears, the volume of the noise will continue to increase over time. Also, it doesn't sound like it is coming from the rear end, although that may be a result of cabin acoustics.
Mine has been the same and never increased at all. It didnt sound like it came from the rear on mine also I thought it was the tube. But when you think about it the tube can carry that sound right to the front of the car. I really heard it when it was on the dyno and i could get close enought to it. Hope it isnt your gears but it was mine. Good Luck let us know what you find
I had a bad 4.10 that started whining at 30mph and got louder as the car accellerated. By the time I was up to hwy speed it sounded like a dental drill grinding on metal. It was almost funny except for the fact that it sucked. The noise would dissappear completely when the car was not under load.
Not only does she whine but anything over 100mph she puts her jacket over her head. I don't allow her in the car anymore and she is limited to my 85 Ford tempo.
