Help! Problem removing stock exhaust..2000
I am "trying" to install a set of B&B Bullets. The instructions say that the stock C5 exaust can be removed without having to cut the exhaust pipe near the axle "hoop". I have tried every friggin' which way, and angle to get the exhaust out, but no dice. The car height off the ground is not the problem. I just cant get the "hoop" and flange section to feed through and out above the rear axle/crossmember. I did remove the sway bar bolts and moved sway bar out of the way...Is B&B FOS when they say it can be removed in one piece??
I just don't want to have to cut the pipe on original exhaust....
Anyone remove their exhaust system without having to cut the exhaust section fron the "hoop" section???
If I do have to cut it, do I use a hacksaw or what??? I hate this kind of work...maybe I should take it to my muffler guy..????
What pisses me off is that the B&B muffler will be a breeze to install since it was designed in 2 sections...but as long as I can't get
the original exhaust out, I am FUBAR'ed.....
DOH!!! Help!!!!

I believe that they do come out with out cutting, as the Z06 Ti. ones are taken off with out cutting. I think if you do a check on the search part of the forum you will find some pictures. The car has to be up a good bit, though.

Mine came out in one piece when I went to the bullets but the passenger side was a major PIA. I had to have the car about 3 feet in the air enough to roll the passenger side exhaust back under the axle towards the front of the car to get exhaust flange to clear. A lift would have made it so much easier to do

NO you do not have to cut the exhaust, it will come out, you just have to finagle it a bit. The back needs to be up about 30" which ment I had to jack car up with floor jack, then support with jack stands, then set the floor jack up on a long piece 6"x6" and bring the jack to it's max extension and reset the jack stands. For me just removing the two sway bar bushings and dropping it out of the way was not enough so I had to remove the endlinks also and just get the whole thing out of there.

It's a sheet metal shield that's next to the fuel tank.
Passanger side only.
Just a few screws.
Takes a bit of messing around, but it does come out without cutting.

add...
hey mike the heat shield that you must remove is only on the passenger side. When under the car and looking upwards at the underside of the car with your feet toward the rear you will see the transmission in the center... then you will see the driver's side exhaust and then to the lateral side of that you will see the heat shielding. It is a sheet metal piece that is silver/ chrome in color... two screws and it slides right out... good luck....

Hi MikeC4 -
The A4's are a little more diffucult, but us can be done - I have not removed the fuel tank shield before to so it, but that is certainly a good idea.
Just to the right of the white box in your picture that says "cut here?", you see two fasteners holding the rear anti-roll bar in place.
Remove the nut and the bolt, and then allow the bar to swivel downward, flexing at the end links.
That'll give you enough room to wiggle them out.
best regards -

You can do it without removing the heat shield but it is simple to remove and replace and it is a whole lot easier to work with getting the exhaust of of an A4 without the heat shield.

anyone else notice the H-pipe flange is BROKEN?? it may help to unbolt the extra flange, this is a common problem on the early cars
the A4's are a pita on the pass side w/out cutting

OK guys.....all done! What a sound those B&B bullets give off....holy decibels Batman!!
Sully, thanks for the email and subsequent advice...
And many thanks to all who responded!!! The C5 Forum members are just as knowledgable as the C4 Forum folks(my old stomping ground)!!!!!
What I finally ended up doing was cutting the old pipes using a Dewalt recipricating saw...cut through the old exhaust pipe like butter. I chose this method for 2 reasons:
1) Would I really ever re-install the old exhaust system? the answer to that is No.....
2) I was really worried about the safety of having the rearend 36" off the ground. I just didn't feel like this was a safe thing for me to do.
My stock exhaust removal solution:
