When the right headlight closes the motor makes a loud grinding sound
for about 7 seconds. The door adjuster **** will pull out 1/8 inch. where the other side is tight. any idea.
2003 coupe 2,800 miles. thanks, mal.

Is your car still under warranty? Sounds like the gears are stripped in the closing mechanism. Pretty common problem from what I hear. I think there is a supporting vendor that manufactures brass gears. Stock ones are plastic.
Just rebuilt my headlight motors this weekend - it's not too tough a job and should eliminate any future problems. Search out the "Rodney Dickman's" replacement gear/rebuild kit. The kit comes with everything - new brass gears to replace the crappy stock ones, grease, epoxy, good instructions and even upgraded braces that the motors don't originally come with. There is everything here on the forum as far as DIY information if you search it that will help you along.

Must have been a good weekend to work on these motors - I did the same thing.
My passenger side motor gear went and I ordered the brass gear kit from Rodney. The repair itself is a piece of cake. Real easy. The hardest part was getting the motors out since I didn't want to remove the entire door assembly. I just removed the black plastic bezel and with two 10mm wrenches you can get the motors out and back in with reasonable effort.
My passenger side went out on the'01 with bad gears replaced entire motor under warranty but I got the old unit from the dealer and will use to fix left side when uit goes out.......are they useable on either side?
Thanks

Not clear what you're asking - if the old passenger unit you have has bad gears how will that fix the left side when it goes out?
Anyways, the driver and passenger side motors are not completly interchangeable. Everything is the same except for the shaft that attaches internally to the motor gear and externally to the headlight door arm - the shaft is totally different since it exits the motor housing from opposite sides when comparing driver and passenger configurations. Other than that, yes, the motors and gears are interchangeable.
