I have a bone stock 01 Z06 and I recently acquired a Borla "XR1" system off of a wrecked C5 coupe my dad bought and I was wondering about the sound, how much louder it is, and if there is a hp increase. Has anybody run this system and were they pleased with it? It was free so I figured I'd put it on unless it sounds horrible. Thanks in advance for any input.
3-4 hp at the most on a stock C5. On a Z06 with the titanium stock exhaust, you may see none or even take a loss of a couple of hp. These aftermarket cat backs are for sound. Our stock systems are pretty dang efficient. I have the Borla Stingers. Classic Hot Rod sound. i love them. Some think they are to loud
I had it on my car for about 3 months, it was loud, but the exhaust note itself I did not like, it sounded too much like a aftermarket truck exhaust, like there was no "treble" just deep and plain sounding for my taste... but you might like it , just depends on your personal taste... I also prefer the look of Quad tips, and that system is a dual tip., that's the other reason I sold it.
I've got it on my '00 M6. I like it a lot. It does have a very pronounced drone at certain rpms under load.
I respectfully disagree with David426. You will not lose hp. You are taking out all the wrap around bends of the stock exhaust and the resonator flows very freely. This is the closest you can get to straight pipes without totally compromising sound quality.
My choice would be for quad tips as well though, my car came with this exhaust when I bought it, so not my choice but no complaints at all. I love the scream it gives up top
Thanks for the opinions. I'm still not sure which way to go. It seems a shame not to put the system on since I have no money in it but I HAVE to have it sound good and I would rather leave it stock for now than to pay to have it put on and it sound like an old camaro with cherry bombs. I also don't want a lot of interior resonance.

Maybe I should qualify my post. The resonance is pretty annoying in 6th gear at 65-68 mph under a load, but clears up as soon as it hits 70. Other than that its very easy to keep the rpm's out of the dead zone (around 1500 rpms under load).
It definitely does not sound like an old camaro with glass packs :p
Sounds similar to the stinger, just a bit meaner. A friend of mine with stingers was suprised at how quiet it was compared to what he figured it would be.
I have a C5 convertible now with catbacks on it that were made from a now out-of-business company and they sound good until you put a load on it and it has that old Ford truck sound. That's what I don't want. I leave it stock before I do that again. I've heard some sound clips online and I want it to sound mean on and off a load. It's not a race car(yet) so I'm wondering if this system is right for what I'm looking for at this time. Again, this system was FREE so I needed to talk to some people on here that know how it sounds and if it's worth installing a bone stock Z.

I'm probably not subjective enough to answer your question then, since I love the sound of mine. If you've heard Borla Stingers before, I would compare them in sound quality on and off load, but maybe 30-40% louder at WOT. Definitely is subtle enough around town that its not annoyingly load, but if I want the pipes to sing, it can definetly be done.
I've never ridden in a stock Z though, so I can't compare the Ti exhaust with the XR-1... sorry.
How much work is it to swap them out? Would you have to cut the Ti off? If its not too much work I would swap it out and judge for yourself.
Fortunately, I do have an extra H-pipe system I can cut up and modify to put this system on while retaining my factory system in case I need to put it back on. I dunno, I keep swaying back and forth as I get more replies! Seems like it may be worth the hassle since I will be able to put it back factory with little trouble. This Z is new to me and I don't want anything to make it seem cheap or seem like some kid cut the pipes off of it. Thanks again for all the replies. They really do help.
swapping the pipes really isnt that hard to do. you should at least try them and see how you like them. i love my stingers and would not really mind if they were louder. ( lg's will soon take car of that ) i also have b&b's on my other car and they drone. the stingers really dont resonate in my stock z at all. so if they are slightly louder than the stingers then you should be fine. try them and get a vid sample to post. i have a funny feeling you will love them.
Thanks guys. I'm gonna try them. It will be a week or so but I will repost with my results to let everyone know. I'll also try to get a sound clip on here or at least a link to let anyone interested know what to expect. Thanks again for everyone's help.
