Default Coolant hose blew off???

The inlet hose to the top of the radiator blew off tonight while I was crusing around town. Was just driving normal, not high revs or anything. The temps were normal before the problem also I think. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone explain what would have caused the problem?

I've just got water in there now, I'll have to take it to the dealer next week to have the system flushed.

Any responses appreciated, thanks guys!

The only time I've heard of this happening is when the hose clamp was loose or removed. The pressure that builds up in the coolant system will result in the hose blowing.

Did you have any work done on the car recently in that area of the car?

It hasn't had any work for a while, but the engine was replace under warranty almost exactly a year ago; I've put almost 4k miles on it since then.

I fixed it as well as I could along the side of the road, but the clamp didn't seem broken and hadn't relaxed at all. It held fine for my 5 min trip home, but I plan on taking off the shroud and completely reattaching the hose.

Maybe it's just a freak thing? I was sure shocked. This is the first big problem I've had in the 4 months owning it.

I would think you have a bad coolant tank cap.

Doing a little searching, it seems the the Dex-Cool can solidify into a "jelly" in some situations. I'm curious if this could have plugged the radiator somewhere and caused a pressure increse.

Just to be safe, I'm going to get a new $10 tank cap too. I'll let you know if they find anything tomorrow during the flush.

Pressure is the key here... for both the cooling system and the clamp, maybe the clamp didn't had enought holding pressure? if it was the screw type maybe it was not tightened enough and if it was the spring style from the factory maybe it was fatigued? now pressure in the cooling system, can be caused by heat, and possibly flow, and air eventering the system from combusiton as in a blown head gasket... If the car didn't appear to be running hot I kinda doubt there is a blown head gasket, or a thermostat issue ect. but I am not looking at this car...

I would install a new clamp, bleed the cooling system of air, and install a new cap on the resivior and see what happens..

Good LucK!

BTW, if you get a new GM cap, it will be a 18 pounder. Mine originally had a 15lb. Don't recall the year GM made the change.
