Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (TargaC5)
FWIW, I read somewhere that the new rings were not necessarily going in to all the 2002 engines, it might take a few weeks of production for the switchover. I have no idea how to tell what rings you have in your car, unless it burns a lot of oil- then you have the old ones! My '01 with the A4 is getting about 5,000 miles/qt unless I run it on a road course at high RPM, then it uses about 1/2 qt for 4 25 min sessions.
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (sorka)
I just had to add a quart of Mobil 1 to my 2002 convertible last week because I was getting the "low oil" message on the DIC. I had about 3700 miles on the car at the time and it p*ssed me off a bit... but I have heard postings that indicate the oil consumption problem may level off over time. I will be watching my dipstick more carefully now!
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (flipm)
Was this the first quart in 3700 miles? If so, then that is a huge improvement. Still not as good as it should be. A modern engine should not burn any noticable oil in 5000 miles. And before anyone starts saying that it is normal for a "race" engine to burn some oil, I will will point out that my 300zx Twin Turbo running 15 psi for over 100K miles burned not a drope between 3000 mile changes. Further more, the oil always came out about the color it went in......golden like honey.

Somehow I have my doubts about the color of the used oil, you must be joking right? And yes, it shouldn't burn oil, but sometimes it does. It is not every engine out there burning oil, just a fraction. And to me, burning a moderate amount of oil while the car is still breaking in (which can take anywhere between 5k to 10k in my mind) is pretty normal.
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (akw408)
No. I'm not joking. The Z isn't the only vehicle where the oil came out just as clean as going in. I had a CBR600F2 and an F4 later and changed the oil on both at 4K intervals. The oil came out at 4K miles *exactly* the color it went in. I do not exagerate. It's a little more amazing on the bike because it has a wet clutch which does contribute some build up in the oil.
All this really means is that these were vehicles that had no blowby or so little blowby that it was not enough to polute the oil during the mileage we're talking about.
I have no doubt that if I were to have waited 10K+ miles on the Z between changes that the color would be dark enough to tell the difference.
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (akw408)
Almost forgot....yes you are absolutely right that burning some oil during break-in is perfectly normal with conventional technology. So hopefully the 2002 reported so far will see a drastic decrease in consumption. It would be nice to see no more than a 1/3 quart in 4000 miles.
Also, a not about my F4. It ceramic cylinder sleeves. I don't know if that contributes to more consistent sealing(probably helps with heat transfer), but the break in instructions are....there aren't any for the engine. The only instructions are no hard stops for 300 miles. This is for proper breakin of the brakes.
And to me, burning a moderate amount of oil while the car is still breaking in (which can take anywhere between 5k to 10k in my mind) is pretty normal.
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (akw408)
I would like to add that the color of the oil in my LT4 only went from light golden to dark golden in 3000 mile oil change intervals (35,000 miles). I never noticed any oil being burned (less than a cup in 3000 miles).
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (sorka)
Sorka,
Got a 2002 Z06 here, just did an oil/filter change at 540 miles, no discernable oil usage at this stage, some will say that I may have did the oil change to early, but, what the heck oil cheap and I wanted to see what it looked like.

Per GM, not me, the 6-Speed drivers are more aggressive or
some BS like that. My guess is the engine gets more varied
RPMs with a 6-Speed than an A4. The 6-Speed people tend
to use the gears to slow down and this may cause extra oil
consumption. I don't recall too many 2001 A4 owners
complaining about oil consumption. The installation of the
Corsa Indy exhaust system did not help as I spend way too
much time in gear now. HiHi
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (Dick Kriss)
Dick Kriss You are correct (in my case) about A4 owners not downshifting but I do seem to do it now since the Corsa Indys are on. Maybe the oil is going to go into the crapper now???
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (WEF's 95)
I just had new 2002 rings installed in my 2001 that has burned 1 quart every 1000 miles since new (now 8500 miles)... According to my dealer this is one of the first C5's that they have retrofitted with the rings and I have a verbal agreement with the service manager that in another 1000 miles if it is still eating oil - it's time for a new motor...
I checked out GM's policy manual to avoid the dealer BS and discovered this:
-Break in is the first 4000 miles according to GM
-Excessive oil consumption is 1 quart in 2000 miles (no typo here)
I have heard so much BS from dealers, it was time to find the truth... So many of us are told at 10000 miles that our car is still breaking in!!! Wrong!!!
I was told by one service guy at my dealer that 1 quart in a 1000 miles is normal - I laughed at him and said that I did not spend 50K on a car that burns this much oil... I asked him why GM advertizes a 10000 mile oil service interval on a car that would burn through all of it's oil in 6000 miles??? He did not have a good answer!
Re: Poll: 2002 oil burners manual trans only? (BLACK/BLACKZ06)
Let's hope this thread doesn't equal the 2001 oil burner.
My 2001 Z06 still goes thru a quart every 650 miles...at 10,100 miles.
Look at the bright side. If you burn a quart every 650 miles, after less than 5,000 miles you've turned over your entire volume of oil once. So... you should only have to change your oil half as often as the rest of us? ;) Hmm, if it weren't for the filter, you may *never* have to change it since you are effectively changing the oil every 4500 miles already anyway. :D
I had a 2001 Vette. By 1000 miles it burned 1/2 qt. I now have a 2002 Z06, and it has not burned ANY oil in 1000 miles. IMO, by 1000 miles, you will be able to tell if it's an oil burner or not. Of course, the engine is really not fully broken in by 1000 miles, so the burn rate could drop some.
By 5000 miles, if its still burning oil, it will always burn oil :cry
