Default This Is Getting Frustrating! I Have An Update

Wondering who has had a torque tube problem. I'm going to make this short.

-A month or so ago the pressure plate broke while launching at the track due to the bolts not being torqued properly. This caused a terrible vibration. Ask for advise on the forum to originally diagnose the problem. Was advised to rev the car at various rpm's and document the amount of vibration, so I did, reving it up to 4500. Was advised to go up to 5000-5500, but didn't feel comfortable w/ the amount of vibration I felt.

-Well took the car apart and discovered the broken pressure plate. Ordered whole new Assembly, installed it, and there was a vibration there. Nothing at all like before, but bad enough that we got textralia to send me a whole new clutch assembly. We installed all the new components and the vibration was still there. Now remember this vibration is nothing like when the pressure plate was broken. It felt like a flywheel out of balance.

- Now we are thinking that while diving home from the track w/ a broken pressure plate and all the reving while trying to diagnose the problem something else most have been damaged. Considered internal engine bearings, until Willyfastz faxed over some info on damaged torque tube diagnosis. I put the car on jack stands, cranked it, put a rubber mallet handle to various components, and the clunking sound that is causing the vibration is defiantly more significant when placed on the torque tube.

I'm interested in hearing of similar experiences, professional advice.

-Damn! I tried to some it all up as quick as possible. Took longer than I thought.

P.S. This project has been tough. Hope I'm nearing the end.

Got it taken apart , and will be hooking up exhaust tomorrow. The tech. Willyfastz will come over so we can crank while the drive train is out, just to make sure the vibration is gone. Ordering torque tube tomorrow. It doesn't apear that many of you have had torque tube issues. Good for you! This has been a pain in the butt.

Dropped the rear end and detached the torque tube. After that I reconnected the exhaust and started the car. At first there was no vibration and thought it was definately a torque tube problem. As the temp. of the car started to increased I revved the motor and felt that slight vibration at 3000 RPMS. I just can feel it in the seat. Not sure if this is responsible for that bad vibration while shifting gears at 3500 rpms.

Called Thunder Racing (they built the motor). Paul said not to jump to conclusions, and take the clutch assembly to be balanced, even though its the second one. Then I will replace bearings and couplings in the torque tube. If that don't work I will have the bearings in the motor replaced.

This crap is very frustrating, but it will be fixed and fixed very soon. I;m sick of the vibration, and look forward to having my car running right. I truly trace this problem back to the shop that installed the first clutch and didn't torque the pressure plate properly. Some inexperienced tech wasn't responsible enough to take a simple precaution for such an important job. This should be interesting.

If you find out your torque tube is no good, I have one of a 2001 Z06 with about 16K miles.

The 2001 and above torque tubes are heavier duty. They have 12MM bolts versus 10MM bolts.

Was going to convert from an auto to a stick but plans changed.

Good luck with the repairs.
