Default Sloppy Shifter Side to Side

Going for the Trifecta, I have posted this question in the Z06 and Autocross forums too. Third times a charm

I installed a new C6 Z06 shifter about 2 months ago in my 04 Z and the shifter wass great, no issues. After doing an HDPE at Infineon Raceway on 9/11, the shifter feels VERY sloppy side to side. While in 1st I can push the shifter to the right until it is in the same position as if in 3rd. It is difficult to put into 1st/2nd out of 3rd/4th sometimes taking 2-3 tries moving it right to left in neutral. I have checked all bolts and they are tight. It's like the linkage running off the back of the shifter is loose. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Gary

Gary, I know you said the bolts are tight, but if you replaced the complete shifter including the base the most likely culprit is the bolt that clamps the shifter rod to the transmission shift linkage. I thought mine was tight but a week after installation I suddenly had the same experience. I was initially too careful so as not to strip the threads, but I got about two more turns when I retorqued it. Give it another look.

Exactly same thing happened to me. It feels like there is a 2-step process in the cinch bolt It feels tight the first time when it hits the beginning of the clamping starting point. Keep going. It is really tight after it pulls the two sides of the clamp together. I don't think you can overtighten the clamp bolt...it is pretty beefy.

Outstanding. That was it. Disassembled the console and watched the movement - there it was, twisting in the clamp. I was sweating thinking the shift rod had come loose at the transmission. Re-torqued to 22 ft/lb and now it is solid as a rock.

Thank you very much
