Have any of you A4 owners ever experience a noise from the transmission that I can only describe as a “growling” sound. This is starting to happen now sporadically but when it does, I’m always at a stop light, in gear with the brakes engaged. When I shift to neutral, the noise obviously stops. Sounds to me as though 1st gear is trying to engage even though the brakes are on.
Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Of course, my 3-year warranty has just expired. BTW, its a 3:15.
Hi there,
I would first check your fluid level, as you may be low on fluid and your tranmission oil pump is cavitating.
Let us know how you make out, c4c5
Haven't checked the level yet. Stock owner's manual doesn't say squat about procedure to check the transmission fluid level. Anyone care to share any tips for checking the level?
You must lift the car and level it. With the engine running and the tranny temp roughly between 100 and 130 degrees, remove the drain/fill plug on the driver side of the tranny pan. Fluid should be level with the bottom of the drain/fill hole. Add or drain accordingly. DO NOT turn the engine off with the plug removed or you will loose a couple of quarts of fluid. Every 3,000 mi when I change the oil I drain the tranny with a small pump and refill. I only swap about 3 quarts but it helps kepp the fluid fresh. I do filter and pan removal every 10,000 mi and that allows a 5 quart swap.
