6th Gear Troubles

I have a 1999 C5 with 16,000 miles. It has a 6 speed manual transmission that, as of recently, will not grab 6th gear. I am able to "fake it out" occassionally by shifting to 4th and back over to 6th. When it does go into 6th, it stays in without any noise or additional problems.

Has anyone ever experienced a similar issue and what was the cause / resolution? Also, does anyone know a reliable transmission guy in the Chicagoland area that would be able to accurately diagnose and repair without taking me to the cleaners??

Stock or aftermarket shifter? If its aftermarket, specifically a Hurst, it could be a problem with the adjustable stops, although the problem would probably affect 2nd and 4th also.

Gee, Doc, if you have been ham-fisted hammering that shifter, it can happen. Good luck, you're gonna need it.
