My wipers started acting goofy. A few minutes after I start the car they have a mind of thier own. They pop up from the fully off position to thier resting spot when the wipers are on, but they are not wiping, they just sit there. If I turn the wiper switch to either low or high they work (most of the time). When I turn them to the off they don't go to thier off position.
Any suggestions on the cause??? Is the switch on it's way out or are the motors going??
I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem but yesterday 9/19 I washed out the entire engine compartment. I did not use the car until today and it was this morning when the problem started.
That would have a great deal to do with your problem. Grounds on these cars are not very good and are exposed to the elements. I would suggest getting a schematic and tracing down the ground path. Clean and if necessary, dry out the contacts and Use contact grease to protect the contacts.
I am afraid you are somewhat screwed. Mine did the exact same thing. There is a circuit board in the wiper motor, taken apart looks like a little computer circuit board about 3 inches square, and that goes out. Evidentialy it was originaly packed with some grease (??) but once the seal goes out, then water gets in there and shorts it out.
Mine started whenever I would wash the car and engine, then it was fine for several months. Then a few weeks ago same thing. Wipers move to the on positon, then just come on and off intermettantly without cause. Switch seems to have little to do with it.
I carreid it to my trusty mechanic and he took the motor out and repaced the circuit board.
Okay, just went and dug out the repair ticket. Says "Checked Electrical Wiring and Found the Windshielf Wipers Circuit Board Defective. Replaced Board and Retested." No part number on the board but if you need to, I can call and get the part number. Cost on labor $162.50 and cost on part $103.94 with tax total repair 277.13
Most likely it is your wiper control module, located under your wiper motor on the drivers side of the car in the cowl area. Just replace the module. It's about $104.00 from Chevy. Make sure you clean out the udders under the wiper motor.
