Default Wiring a Donnelly Mirror

I just bought a Magna Donnelly inside rearview mirror with auto-dimming and compass. The instructions that came with it are for running new wiring across the top of the headliner and down the A pillar to the ignition area and splicing into any wire that is only hot when the ignition is on. It seems to me that the wiring for the stock mirror ought to be usable, but I don't know how to do it. Anybody have any experience with installing a Donnelly mirror using existing wiring? BTW, the stock mirror is a maual dim type with the map lights.

Thanks.

This might help with what the stock wires are now.

Thanks, Rich. Do you happen to know if the same wiring would be used with an electrchromic mirror with a compass?

You'll still need a ignition on source for the compass. But the rest of the mirror turns on when the lights are on.

Sorry to be so thick-skulled, but let me make sure I'm following you. Since the maplight wiring is always hot, the wiring method described in the link you sent earlier would result in the compass being on all the time, pulling from the battery when the ignition is turned off. To avoid that, I'll still need to run wires from the mirror to an ignition on source, such as the radio. Is that correct?

Why take the chance of shorting something out???
You might be surprised that it might be plug n' play? They won't tell you because of the liability but they are very helpful.

Thanks, Steve. I called Wanda (actually talked to one her staff). They were very helpful and pointed out that wiring the mirror any way other than their way would void the warranty. Not worth risking damage just to be "lazy".
