Default Ok Im confused???

I thought I needed a 160' Thermo or my 2000 and now I hear 180 is what I should go with. What about 170'? Seems there is a lot of different ways to go. I'm going to change any fluid and I want to put a new lower temp one in while Im having this done. I am in Texas and really just want to keep it a little cooler. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Unless you are going dragracing and will give the car plenty of time between runs to cool down, AND you have it tuned for the lower temps, stick with the stock 190. A 160 will not lower the operating temps. It will only make it take longer to reach the normal operating temperature which will be anywhere from 195 to 225. Occasionally higher while idling until the fans kick in.

Changing a thermostat alone will not do much, once the engine gets to the temp the thermostat is set for it is done. That is it can't do anything more... The effect is that the engine will run cooler for a little while, depending on the ambient temp. When its 100f out it will be cooler for only a few minutes if you are in traffic. If its 60f out then it will stay cooler for longer, but will still probably go into normal operating temps, especially in traffic.

Why do you need to lower the temps? If you don't rack the car, then there is probably nothing wrong with the temps. If your uncomfortable with the high heat of those texas days, then check out a few things that WILL remove heat or block it from you: Have the fans programmed to come on at lower temps. (That is where the real work is done). Clean the debris from the radiator routinely. Look at getting a tunnel plate like the abs of steel and some insulation around the cabin. If you track the car, then a racing radiator may be the best option.

Thanks I was just concerned about the 100+ temps here in Texas. I though by going with a lower thermo it would help.

Kind of like feeling a chill and setting the air conditioning thermostat in your house at 75 instead of 70 on a 50 degree day.

One other thing you may do if you have a tuner in your area is set your cool fan to come on earlier. I did this and put a 160 in my car and I track my car and it does not get above 190. This is in August at Pocono. Tracked it in July in NY Watkins Glen, record heat 2 days, nothing above 190. Also I live in NC and it has been HOT last few months.
