Default Lower Temp. Thermostat

I have a '98 which is for now stock. Ive been looking at little things to do to it to boost performance, nothing too major, just little things here and there. I was curious as to if there would be a negative or unwanted effect of adding a lower temperature thermostat to a daily driver. Any insight would be greatly appreciated as would any recommendations for any performance parts.

Angry8s,
Fill out your profile and you are certainly to get more information! The guys here are great and you'll have that bad boy running better sooner than you think! Fill it out!

Now! I have the 160* thermostat in my '98 as well as the Hypertech tuner and I've reset the fans to come on earlier in harmony with the thermostat, if you don't it wont cool it much more than at the stock fan setting's. (If you want to know the setting's of the fans you can either look on Hypertechs website or PM respond to this and I'll give them to you, can't remember the setting at this time!)

You will benefit also if you do a throttle coolant bypass too! You can either purchase a kit or make your own(much cheaper!)

Look here at this article http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...modifications/ these are one of many sites to look at and also here at the forum you will get that and a whole lot more info!

Look also here http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?category=0 excellent site!

Fill out your profile! and welcome to the forum!

Thanks, Matt

Orilleys has a Murray stat and housing thats for the ls1 engine. It is 20.00 and is set at 160deg. The part number for the stock 187deg is 37987 and I think the 160 part number is 37960(I will check). You can look inside of the neck and it is stamped 160 on the stat not the housing. Me and my friends run them with no problems. I would have a tuner set the fans if you use the 160 stat.
The throttle body bypass kit is found on ebay and other places. The best way to do this is skip the kit and just buy a new hose to replace the 2 on each side of the throttle body. Plug the TB inlet/outlet barbs with some vacume caps if you want.
Just trying to save you some cash$$$$
good luck!

I have a 160* But the fans keep coming on every 2 mins even In the cold, you can find a 170* out there somewhere I'm sure. I bet that would be a better choice, I'm gonna look Into that for myself.
