I took a z06 out for a test drive and it made a funny noise when the clutch was depressed so it was just coasting along around 40mph. When I put it in neutral and let off the clutch, it went away. It sounded like a quiet intermittent rattle or chatter. They put it up on a lift and found the hydraulic line was off it's mounting bracket by the steering column.
With that back in place, it made a different noise, similar to putting steel wool to a spinning flywheel, a whooshing sound, but was constant. Once it was in neutral and the clutch was let out, it made a soft thunk and was quiet. I tried it several times and it did it consistently every time.
I also noticed a faint burning/hot smell and it seemed stronger on the passenger side under the hood. The clutch didn't seem to slip at all when I nailed the gas and the car only has 26k miles.
Any suggestions on what this is and how big a deal it may be?
Sounds like a clutch throw out bearing or possibly the pilot bearing. I'm no mechanic but I would not even think about buying that car with a driveline problem. Repairs are very, very expensive.
It's still under warranty for the next year and 12k miles, plus I'd have them fix it before I buy. I'm trying to see if anyone else has experienced or seen similar problems so that I can be more sure the right thing is fixed.
