When accelerating in all gears except 4'th, I get a high pitched noise that sounds like bearings or vacuum leak. Most noticeable in first through third. Noise only occurs when accelerating (i.e., if drive train is not under load, no noise). Have 12,000 miles on the car, first noticed this at about (approx.) 6,000 miles.
Took car to dealer, the mechanic (after considerable consultation with Chevy tech support) thinks the problem is with bearings in the transmission. It was explained to me that 4'th gear is exempt from the noise because 4'th is "direct drive" (or something like that, don't remember exact terminology). He has ordered parts and said will have to pull the tranny and replace bearings.
Anyone else had similar problem? If so, please let me know your experience. Also - should I push for a totally new transmission or let the dealer replace bearings? So far, my dealer's mechanic has been excellent - does everything right the first time!
Sounds nearly like mine did when the rear-end went out, but mine whined in all gears. I pushed them to replace the whole rear-end, and I would do the same for the trans.
