Default Help! Ac Making Clanking, Rattling Noice.

2000 Convertible.
Upon Starting My Car Last Night, I Noticed A Loud Rattling, Clanking Noice. It Was A Steady Noice. I Thought Maybe It Might Be The Air Conditioner So I Turned It Off And Instantly The Noice Stopped. I Then Turned It Back On And The Noice Started Again. I Let It Run For A Little Bit And The Noice Became Less And Less Noticable. It Then Stopped. The Day Before It Did The Same Thing. The Noice Does Stop After Awhile And The Car Seems To Be Fine. The Air Conditioner Runs What I Would Consider Normal But I Get The Feeling That Something Is Very Wrong. I Read A Thread On A Vette That Was Alot Older Than Mine That Describbed A Similar Problem. Im Wondering If Its The Air Compressor. I Just Bought This Car A Few Days Ago, And Hope This Isnt A Bad Sign.
Any Suggestions As To What The Problem Could Be?
Thanks.

Sounds like the clutch mechanism on the compressor is bad. It locks up when switch is turned on, that's why it quiets down when you switch off compressor.

It might be repairable if you caught it before it damaged any of the components.

But If I Dont Turn It Off The Sound/noice Gets Lower And Lower And Then Stops After The Car Has Been Running For A Couple Of Minutes Or Less. The Air Conditioner Runs Fine.
Could It Still Be The Problem Your Stating If The Sound Is Stopping? Or Is This A Sign That It Is Going Out. What Does Something Like This Cost To Repair?

Depending on the noise, it could be something in the fan for the AC.

The fan is located just under the glove box area. If you know what you are doing to can have the fan off within a few minutes and clean out leaves...
