Default Anything else I should replace along with water pump?

I was getting a squeal occasionally, so this morning dropped her off for an oil change, and to check on the belts. Well, the mechanic barely has the car on the lift and he points to me and motions me over.

Under the car, anti freeze. I was like..well..there go the headers I wanted to buy. So this is probably dropping on the belts, causing the squeaks, I'm guessing. Water Pump mebbe.

But, before I go "yar...git r done", I wanted to ask those that have been through something similar...thier thoughts.

Anything else I should do while that's getting done under there? She's got almost 70K on her, some of it at WOT, so this hasn't been a wimpy daily driver!

Any replacements/upgrades to components I should be looking at? timing belt? etc?

Thanks.

Damn..I wanted those headers too.

Jeff

Thanks for the input. Dont think I'm ready to opt for the electric pump at 600 bucks yet, but the tensioners and belts are a definite. Anyone seen anywhere with good prices and products?

Might want to consider dropping in a new thermostat and the oring/gasket on the water neck.

Yea the electrics are nice, and they do a great job keeping the car cool and helping bleed the system, but the gains are just about none in RWHP ect... But, they do look cool

'timing belt', the LS1's use a chain, new h20 pump w/ labor would be < $250; the idler pulley next to the p/s sometimes fails along w/ the tensioner, both are <$90 new from GM

Ok...looking at water pumps..I'm VERY tempted to go electric. Yes I know it doesnt create horsepower, but I can understand it lifting some of the load off the engine. Sadly, the CF prices are about 60 bucks higher than other places, so...320 or so for that. And a wiring harness. Question though...if I do go electric...(I'm not an engine guru..so forgive the dumb questions), and issues with belts and such?

As for the tensioners...that I'm not understanding. I've not heard of people having issues with those..have they? And yes Connecticut, I stand corrected.

And as for the prices..someone said <250 bought and installed? Damn..I need to find a new place to get work done.

You sure the water pump is somehow leaking out the front, and not at the gaskets or perhaps the hoses somewhere?

It may well be the gaskets. But with 70K on the car, If you've got to go in there. I'd rather go in once and not twice, you know what I mean?

Actually the one thing I was really wondering was if I should replace the timing chains...but I havent heard anyone even mention that.

Yeah..Nunally Chevrolet up here is talking 280 in labor alone. I think I'm going to a local Pontiac shop...service has been good there so far..and prices are definitely cheaper.

The water pump is seriously a very easy install. You're not really going "in there" anywhere (no offense). The only thing the service manual says you have to remove is the air bridge and air box assembly (where your air filter sits in). If it were me I'd just get the air bridge out of the way for better maneuverability. Remove the serpentine belt, and drain the coolant.

Once that's out of the way you just unclamp the hoses from the pump (4 of them) and pull out 6 bolts, if I remember correctly.

Seriously, this is a job that a novice DIY person could do with the right pliers, a screwdriver, a 10mm socket, some ratchet extensions, and a torque wrench.

Anyone who has worked on a Corvette before should be able to do this job in an hour easily. Be sure they really are charging you $280 just for labor. If so, they are ripping you off.

Can you email the exact instructions? Torque settings, etc? I'll search on the web as well...reckon I should buy the manuals. Ugh

Anyone ever installed the electric motor?

Let's see if this works. Hope it saves you a few bones.

Clicky:

Oh, and please just download the data once and save it to your computer. Don't cross link this to other forums. I don't want my hosting account to run out of juice.

Thanks.

I am sure he is right about the labor he did say George Nunnally Chevrolet. They deal mostly with Wal-Mart executives and money is not a problem. PM me I will have a couple of people you can check out it your are still interested is having someone change it for you.
