Default Can Oil Pan Be Removed Without Engine Removal?

Hi All,

What exactly needs to be disassembled in order to remove the oil pan on a C5 with LS1? It's all stock with no mods.

Engine will have to be supported from above and the front cradle lowered....

Is that easier than completely removing the engine? If so, why? Dropping the cradle seems a lot of work too. What's involved in dropping the cradle?

Just wanting to know the pros and cons from either method.

I am in the same boat. I have a damaged pan that needs replacing. Everyone I have spoken to says I should remove the motor. They say and I agree it is not safe to be under the motor while it is supported only by an engine hoist.

GM's own service procedures say it can be done by dropping the cradle. However, they do specify use of an engine support fixture.

I guess it really comes down to whether or not you can build or obtain said fixture, or if you'd rather undertake a LOT more effort and remove the drivetrain.

It is only about 1.5>2 hours to get it down.
Disconnect the 2 rack bolts, inner LCA bolts, motor mounts, the cradle bolts while supporting engine under the crank pulley. If you get the cradle down ~6" you can get the pan off.
