Default tune it yourself???

I thought I was ready to just go get an intake system on my vette. Now I hear people are saying they have problems at WOT with pinging and it is normal if you don't tune the car for the increased air. Please tell me it is a simple tweak of a screw here or twist of a bolt there to do this.

I had never read the pinging threads because I didn't have that problem. Now it seems that I may have it shortly. Help all. Unlike a bunch of you, I don't have a big name tuner near me to help....

if you change any part of the air intake, especially if you install a tuner MAF like Granitelli, you will want to perform the "Relearn" sequence. this procedure is a series of steps where you sytematically "reboot" the PCM's, then properly break them in in a 30 mile varied-speed/load road trip. it works like a charm. i'll send you the procedure to your provided email in your profile. dont seat the pinging...i've never heard any of my C5 vette pals (or myself) have that problem after intake mods.

ChasNMe: If you screw up an input, like removing a MAF screen for example, the computer CANNOT run you engine correctly. You can compensate with a changed program or some altered input to "fool" the computer. When I did the intake, filter, MAF screen change, my car seemed OK until I tried to go fast. I lost a lot at the top end and had quite a bit of timing retard, etc. A new program has taken care of that....

It is not a hard process to tune in the mods you have added to assure the engine is running correctly .
You do not need to blow away your G.M EPA approved PCM software but can do what you need by using a MAF translator and a PCM scanner tool.
Both are easy to use ( I can teach you) and once you install the MAFT which takes about 5 minutes to do, then you just adjust via two rotary switches in the MAFT to do the tuning.

Some people are saying you have to drive up to 50 miles for a PCM relearn process
The correct process as per G.M is :

If your looking for a MAFT or decent PCM scanner I can get them for you.

IMHO, I would begin doing your PCM tracing now for this will not only get your learning curve up in analyzing the traces but gives you a good baseline of how the engine is performing and then when you do the exhaust you'll be able to see the changes and know what is need to fune tune for the charactistics of your new exhaust system and if it meshed well with the other functions of the engine. The less changes you do at one time then will help you know what might be causing ill perfromance from a tuning standpoint.
E-mail the traces and I'll work with you to get a good tune.

Tom, not sure what your asking, the procedures are listed in the webpages i pointed to in the above response,
Keep in mind there is a relearn for idle, basic PCM relearn and important to remember sensors like the one for the crank need to be properly learned for it is used to determine knock and thus that 5,000 plus RPM learn procedure needs to be done in the fashion I listed in those webages as G.M requires and not just driving some distance.
