Is anyone else out there experiencing pinging when stepping on the throttle (either all the way or even just a little) at highway speeds?
I thought I saw a post or two out about the Blackwing causing a lean mixture, thereby causing pinging at WOT. I am getting some pinging not only at WOT, but also when going about 70 mph and then gently stepping on the gas.
I'm thinking about putting the stock airbox back in..

Yep, mine did just that. Put the stock airbox back on and it quit. Put the Blackwing back on and it pinged again.
Only way to stop it was to initially set the timing back 4 degrees with a hand-held thingy.....then after some performance mods, I had the computer reprogrammed to put an end to it.
Some vettes ping and some don't. Obviously the difference in production-line tolerances.
All we got around here is 91 oct fuel, so that's what I had to have it tuned to. When I could find some 93 octane, it didn't ping.
2004 Six speed coupe. Blackwing with WCC air bridge and I fell for the Granatelli MAS. AR headers, cats and x-pipe with Corsa Indy's. Vette Doctors did the Dyno tune. No problems. I also put on a hood seal and I like the way the Blackwing uses the stock mounts. Mine fits nice and snug!
Haven't had any of that happen for me. I just cleaned mine about two weeks ago and didn't notice it before or after. Good luck, let us know what your outcome is.
Is this a new install? I've seen MAF sensor wires get caked in filter oil which can cause a lean mixture over time. If this is the case, remove the MAF and clean it with electrical contact cleaner.
i experience pinging also at 60+mph but i think it's because of the 91 octane also, plus the elevation. We're at about 3000 ft. here in west Texas and it might be the problem as well. interesting to think it might be the Blackwing. keep us posted.
I had a BW and my ride pinged up a storm also, mostly at WOT. Went back to stock box W/Z06 lid & K&N and all is good. I figure too much air getting in and possibly turbulant air at the MAF due to fog light housings cut open. I noticed the opening in the stock air box lid is basicly against the vertical piece of metal the grommets attach to, which seems to shield, for lack of a better word, the filter from any turbulant air making it's way to the MAF and throwing readings off. GM could have put this opening anywhere on the lid, but chose this location. It is strange though how some have the BW setup and no problems at all.
Anyway, this is just my opinion, so don't get all crazy on me!
How do you hear pinging at WOT? It must be a pretty loud ping. I've had mine for a few months now and I don't hear any pinging.
Yes, it's pretty easy to hear pinging at WOT...
Anyway, it is a new install and I am using 93 octane fuel. Either I got some bad fuel (which I doubt) or else there is an air leak (which I can check)?
Just an annoying thing since this seems like a relatively new problem that has surfaced since the BW install.

Thanks for the responses, everyone..
Re-check the connections and the fuel. If that doesn't work, you may need a tune. I got lean codes occasionally at the track when I first got my Halltech stinger. A tune fixed it up nicely and added some more power.
I just installed Blackwings on my 50th anniversary and my 04 CE. I disconected the battery on both, and left it undone during the install.
Neither one ping, I use 93 Octane when I can get it. or it's back to 91.
I wonder if carbon build-up can be a possible cause (even though the engine only has 20k miles on it and I swear the pinging wasn't happening before the Blackwing)!
I think a tune is in order, though.
