Default Converter Lockup From 46-51mph

'98 with 86k miles on the clock. From 46-51mph or so, the converter seems to not want to lock. Sometimes i can feel the solenoid lock and unlock 3 or 4 times in a short 3-4 second period. Ultimatel it will fainlly lock up. It doesn't always do it though. Sometimes after it locks up if i begin going up a slight incline (like 1% grade even) the converter will unlock and lock up again 3 or 4 times real quick. Haven't really checked my tranny fluid temps - it does it after sitting overnight after only running for about 2 minutes...so tranny can't be that warm. From 60mph onwards it's solid and locks up fine and unlocks only when given a decent amount of throttle - exactly how i would expect it to react. I'm thinking it's the solenoid that's bad? Is the solenoid in these trannies replacable? Other opinions on what it might be? I haven't personally checked the transmission fluid, when i got new tires put on last week they checked all the fluids for me and said it was good. All my tranny experience so far is on 4L60Es so i'm kinda green.

Default tranny

I'm certainly no tranny expert, however you say that it only happens after sitting all night and then during the first few minutes of driving. It could be low on fluid and as the tranny heats up the aluminum expands and the fluid level goes up about 1/2 quart or so. Before I would tear into the transmission I would check the fluid. With the car warmed up go thru the gears on the shifter, put the selector in park, carefully pull the fill plug and see if the fluid is up to the bottom of the hole. Be very careful as the fluid will be hot. If it is up to the hole then you have tranny troubles, if not just slowly fill up to the bottom of the plug hole.

I'm surprised you have 86 k on the clock.. Is that the original tranny? The 4l60e is a real POS.. Mine went south at 38k. Heat kills these things.. Here in Texas you will see 210 -220 tranny temps with stock fan settings and thermostat and no aftermarket trans cooler. Go out for a real spirited drive and you will see 230-240 tranny temps. This is in the Summer months May thru September.. 210-220 temps will slowly eat your transmission up.. 230-240 tranny will really fry it quickly. Clutch paks usually go first (2nd to 3rd gear) then sunshell... Up North you may see better tranny life with cooler temps.. Rodney builds a good tranny, that will take it all.. Hey Rodney.. if you are reading this I think if you move to Dallas-Houston Texas... Lots of 4l60e trannys down here... Your business will do really good in this hot hell climate.. Just a thought from Jack Handy!!

Sorry, i probably wasn't clear. It happens right after starting up the vehicle while the tranny is still presumable cold (without me checking the temp). The problem continues the entire time i drive if i run between 46-51mph.

My '94 T/A had 118k on original tranny and it was still operating fine. My '94 Camaro was cool up until a little after 120k. If the tranny is on the way out i'll probalby just do an M6 swap when the time comes. Outside of hte seeming confusion in that speed range though the tranny operates fine. If the tranny were on the way out wouldn't the converter lockup issue occur at higher speeds as well?

More than likely a worn TCC Regulator valve bore. Replace valve body or do what I would do,install a Transgo shift kit which replaces this valve. For more info feel free to give us a call.
