Frankly, I am not real sure what good it did because I still had sand in the engine compartment. But it does provide a nice finished look.
My seal did not stick well in the center and after several unsuccessful attempts to glue it, I just decided to live without it.
Since removing the seal the amount of sand in the engine bay has not increased , so that leads me to the conclusion that it has a very limited functional purpose.
You'll still get dirt/sand/etc. in the engine bay. Take a look around your headlight covers. There's no seal there.
The main advantage to the performance hood seal (at least in my eyes) is not performance (reduced drag or whatever they claim in the ads), but rather it's elimination of water coming in right above your air filter. This is a must-have mod if you have an exposed filter, such as a Donaldson. Just make sure that if you're planning on opening your hood after it rains, you wipe off the water from the hood before opening it or else the water will drain right on your filter.
I'm not sure if it makes a difference whether you mount it on the side or on the bottom, but I have never seen water (even after a car wash) on the engine bay directly underneath the performance hood seal.
Our CAU Performance Hood Seal helps keep the engine cleaner, and helps stop hood turbulence at higher speeds. We also include an alcohol swab to clean the area. Most put it on the bottom, but it may be applied either way.
They are on special for the month with free ground shipping.
The seal should be installed with the sticky side toward the front of the car. This way the hood pushes against the adhesive side when closed rather than pulling on it. JMHO

I had it down at first.. dirt got between the seal and the front of the facia.. it sealed against water which is what i wanted..but the dirt was too visable.. So I removed it.. cleaned the front and bottom side with denatured alcohol not Rubbing alcohol... put on two strips of double sided tape one on the front face and one on the bottom.. reinstalled the seal.. and it is the way is should have been from the manufacturer...
Don't remember who suggested it but I bought the seal from GM that goes along the sides on each fender.....sticks great....works great....installed on the vertical edge just like the fenders.
I don't think it was dumb - took me a minute to think about it. Mine's on the side (front). Worked fine for a year so far keeping the water off my exposed K&N. :seeya
