Default help with parking brake

I'll be taking my car to inspection this month in New Jersey, and the car with parking brake up all the way will move when placed in first, and thats how they check it.My question is how to adjust. Thanks in advance. Denny

You may want to pull the wheels and rotors to check to if the brake adjusters are still working.

Cable for emergency brake runs through tunnel.

shoes may be shot also they are very thin. I took mine off and forgot but they is probably an adjustment like old drum brakes.

They do have adjustment slots. There is also a possibility the problem is in the tunnel area. My 98 would raise all the way to the top with no resistance, but not hold. The problem turned out to be the end part of the brake handle itself was not engaging the pulley that catches the cable to pull it tight. If you know how to adjust the shoes, that would be the first step, if not, sounds like a trip to the mechanic.

Do a search on this forum and there is a procedure to adjust the parking brakes if you don't have an owners manual. I followed the procedure to adjust mine and it worked fine. You have to remove the rear brake calipers, support brackets and rotors. There are star adjusters similar to old drum brakes, but no access port on the backing plate so you have to pull the rotors. Not difficult, but it took a couple of hours. good luck.
