I am driving my first C5 and loving it. I would like to add remote door unlocking. Is it simply a matter of buying the fobs I see advertised here and doing some programing?
What year do you have? The early C5s came with a setup similar to the C6 where the door unlocks as you walk up to the car or locks as you walk away from it. The feature could be turned off with a switch on the remote since it tended to make the car lock and unlock the doors if the key fob was close (20 to 30 ft) to the car. With the feature turned off you had to push the unlock and lock buttons on the remote. The later C5s just have the pushbutton unlock and lock.

Yes, but buy the right fob for your year. 2001 and up are pretty inexpensive.
97-99 Cheap
2000 Expensive works only on 2000s
01-04 Cheap
I disagree with the 97-98 cheap. Anywhere from $60 to $100 ea used. 2001 and up 2 for $30 or so. Never bought any 2000, but I do know that the 97-98 will work on 2000, just won't have passive. I programmed a spare 98 for a friend's 2000 while he was looking.
Thanks for the replys...... I should have mentioned my year in the first post. It is a 2001. So I simply buy a remote and make sure I get programing directions with it?

Programming directions are in your owner's manual.
If you've got any buddies in the car business, they hang on to fobs for some reason. I went by the local Chevy dealer and he opened a drawer full of fobs and gave me one, which I programmed as a spare for a friends 2001. You can buy em on ebay for around 10 bucks plus shipping. Check the number on the back of the fob. I don't have one handy, but you can get the number off the ebay listings.
I did follow a couple for a 2001 on E-bay but they had different part numbers. One was 25695954 and the other was 25695955. I had planned to check with dealer in AM

Those are the two fobs (#1 and #2) either will work. You can buy two for around 30 bucks delivered, or ask your dealer if he has any used ones left over from traded cars. If you only want one, take either number and follow the instructions in the manual. It's simple to do with the DIC options button on your car.
