I was at the dealer last week and asked if they had a database which would show how many instances of various issues were reported and acted upon in relation to C5s over time. My reason for asking was that I am planning on keeping my C5 for several more years and would like to know the frequency with which certian parts fail on the average to try and head off some grief. I was told there was no such database. Surely there is based on all the paperwork that has to be filled out at a dealership for the smallest incident, but may just not be public record. I guess just posting that information may cause GM a lot of legal issues, but I did not know if there was some public right to access such information. I am not wanting to launch a campaign -just wanted to know if it was out there?
I can understand why they might want to keep warranty repairs confidential and what they covered if anything - I am just curious about information such as how many fuel pumps have been replaced at a dealerships and at what mileage (covered or not).
they do collect the data, but there database either can't generate a report based on the type of failure or they don't want to share it which I don't see how you could make them.
Spend some time here and in the the Tech section and you'll get a pretty good idea of what to look out for.
If you have the right kind of connections you can get ALL the information you seek. When I bought my 99 Vert the salesman gave me a print out on my VIN which showed all the Warranty repairs made to my car. It is called a "GM Vehicle Inquiry System" summary report. The information is in their computers you just have to know the right people that will get it for you. He also gave me a copy of the Technical Service Bulletins aka "TSB's" for my 99 which is 3 pages long.

That's true, but the question was about overall data from C5s, not about warranty/repair work on a specific car.
JD Power and others report on problems by model and type of issue. Are they just based on surveys or do they have access to actual data from the companies? I agree that following this forum gives you a good idea of the common problems with C5s. Unfortunately, I think some of them appear more common than they actually are, because problems are the only reason for many people to post.
